Abstract:
Biomedical informatics is the interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses of biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving, and decision making, motivated by efforts to improve human health.
Healthcare processes need medical software and clinical decision aid systems. During the presentation both topics will be addressed presenting several projects I carried on during my research career.
Speaker’s biography:
Dr. Gabriella Balestra graduated in Computer science in 1980 at the University of Torino. She obtained a PhD on Computer science and system theory in 1989 at Politecnico di Torino. In 1993 she became research assistant professor at Politecnico di Torino.
Her main research interests are focused on bioengineering and in particular on design and development of medical software; clinical process modeling; telemedicine; the use of artificial intelligence/machine learning methods to the analysis and interpretation of biomedical data and signals and medical images.
Since the 90s she has been active on technology transfer in the fields of biomedical instrumentation and medical informatics.
Since 1993 she has been active in teaching classes for bachelor, master and PhD students in medical informatics, biomedical data interpretation, decision support systems, healthcare technology management. She tutored more than 180 master students and 8 PhD students. Since 2000 she has been active in the development and management of the Biomedical Engineering programs at Politecnico di Torino.
