6-Day Webinar on “Machine Learning”

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering, UCEOU in association with IEEE OUCE Computer Society organized a 6 Day Webinar on Machine Learning from 14th to 19th September 2020. Senior lecturers from the department of CSE, UCEOU, and a team of 4 members from 360DigiTMG were the speakers for this event. The participants consisted of students, research scholars, and faculty. The event was conducted on the google meet platform.

Day 1:  14th September,2020

Inaugural Function:

The webinar started off with the inaugural function at around 3:45 pm. In the inaugural function, Prof. S. Sameen Fatima, Former Principal of UCE(A),OU has graced the event as the Chief Guest and Prof. Kumar Molugaram, Principal of UCE(A), OU as the Guest of Honour. Among other dignitaries present in the inaugural were Prof.P.V. Sudha, Head of the Department, Computer Science & Engineering, UCEOU and Prof. K.Shyamala, Dean, FOI & Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, UCEOU.

The session started with both the chief guest and guest of honor discussing the importance of Machine Learning and it’s key concepts. This was followed by the introduction of Mr.Bharani Kumar, the expert speaker from 360DigiTMG, and projects done by him in Machine Learning.

Topics Covered on Day 1:

Mr.Bharani took over the session and started with the data types, their identification, and application, scales of measurement, balanced & imbalance datasets, primary & secondary data sources. He then explained how to approach a business problem and use machine learning by giving examples of his projects. After a break of 10 minutes, he taught us concepts of probability, probability distribution, and influential statistics. He concluded the session by doing a quick recap of the topics covered in that session.  The session ended at around 7:30 pm and a total of 130 members attended the webinar on Day 1.

Day 2:  15th September 2020

The second day of the webinar had two speakers and the session started at 4 p.m. and continued till 7 p.m.

The first session was taken by Mr. Nitin Mishra, a data science trainer from 360DigiTMG. He started the session with exploratory data analysis. He explained the first and second-moment business decisions which covered measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion.

Mr. Bharani then continued the session by explaining the third & fourth-moment business decisions which comprised skewness and kurtosis respectively. He showed the installation of R studio and gave its introduction. He demonstrated the basic functions and implementation of histograms in R. He later showed the graphical techniques present in exploratory data analysis.

The webinar ended with a Q&A session.

Day 3: 16th September 2020

The third day had two speakers, Mr.Bharani and Prof.P.V.Sudha. The session started at 4 p.m. and ended at 7 p.m. It had around 80 participants.

The first session was taken up by Mr.Bharani. He started with the introduction to supervised learning. He then continued with the regression analysis wherein he showed how to split data into testing & training data and then he explained simple and multiple linear regression. There was a short Q&A after the first session which ended with a break.

The second session was taken by Prof.P.V.Sudha, where she gave a presentation on time series prediction which included various examples to better understand the concept. She also explained the autocorrelation function, showed resources to get data sets from  and concluded the session.

Day 4: 17th September 2020

On day 4 Mr. Bharani started the session with probability. He gave an in-depth explanation of linear and logistic regression and showed its implementation with a use case. He also explained the sigmoid curve, ROC curve, and confusion matrix.

In the next session, Deepthi, a Research Associate from 360 DigiTMG demonstrated the programming of linear and logistic regression, ROC curve and other parameters in R Studio.

Day 5: 18th September 2020

On the fifth day of the webinar, decision trees and its applications were covered. Mr. Bharani explained decision trees and how it is used for classification. Then he continued with a greedy algorithm to calculate information gain (measure of entropy). Prof. K. Shyamala continued the session by showing how to build a decision tree and she illustrated the applications of decision trees. Later she focused on how a decision tree algorithm can be used for analyzing data obtained from social media. Deepthi from 360 DigiTMG covered probability, joint and conditional probability, Naive Bayes classification algorithm, Bayes rule, and applications. She also showed the coding of the Naive Bayes algorithm. The webinar ended with a Q&A session at 7 p.m.

Day 6: 19th September 2020

Day 6 of the webinar started at 11:30 a.m. and went on till 5 p.m.

In the morning session, we had Prof.Padmaja speak about Sentiment Analysis. She spoke about it’s applications, features, tools & resources, challenges for SA and an interesting case study. Prof.S.K.Lokhande explained about Natural Language Processing in Machine Learning. He spoke about Natural Language ToolKit and various concepts of NLP.

In the next session, we had Miss. Shubha from 360DigiTMG talks about Artificial Neural Networks. She also explained how Deep Learning can be applied to Image Recognition, Text Processing, and Speech Recognition.  The webinar ended with a Q&A session and a quick recap of all the topics covered in all the webinar sessions.

On 23rd September 2020, a test was conducted based on all the concepts from the webinar and around 100 participants gave the test and were later given a certificate of participation.

The entire session was really informative and helpful for the participants as it covered all the key concepts of Machine Learning.
