Robotics Club Session-5 “Gears and Sensors”

This was the fifth session of the Robotics Club held on 5th March 2019. It was hosted by the members of IEEE OUCE Student Branch and the speakers were M.V. Sudhanshu, CH. Krishna Keerthana, Lindsay B. Charles and Najeebuddin Mohammed.

The session started with a theoretical explanation by M.V. Sudhanshu about gears, its types, applications for each type and the frequency of their use in robotics. Special attention was given in explanation of spur gears, including its construction, nomenclature and commercial specifications. A PowerPoint presentation with detailed and labelled pictures along with videos were shown to the attendees for better understanding. After every topic, some time was given for the attendees to ask queries to the speaker. Then, the concept of sensors was introduced by CH. Krishna Keerthana. With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, the most widely used gears along with their parts, working principle, connection diagram and application was explained to the audience in detail.

In order to better understand the use of sensors in robotics-related projects, Lindsay B. Charles brought his project as a show-n-tell. The project was an Arduino Micro based device which could imitate, synthesize and reproduce the sound of any musical instrument by using only electronic components. This acted as a method to show the attendees the various applications that the components they are learning can be used in. Attendees were also allowed to look at the internal components of the device to get a better understanding.

After this, a practical session about the coding of each sensor was taken by Najeebuddin Mohammed. The attendees were divided into teams and each team was a given a pack of all sensors to be shown. The connections to an Arduino Uno and the code to be written was explained in detail for every sensor and queries were encouraged. The teams had to try out the same with the sensors given. The session was concluded with a Q&A for attendees to clarify any doubts they had regarding the any of the topics they had learned during the day.
