02 2020 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues #1,

IEEE Rochester Section has many great meetings to look forward to in 2020.

This year we will host two Joint Chapter Meetings (JCM) to bring all of the IEEE Societies together for an evening of technical talks, networking, and dinner. Our Vice-Chair, Cristian Linte, is already busy identifying a date and time for the Spring JCM. A second JCM will take place sometime in the fall.

The joint Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) will host the Systems and Technologies for Remote Sensing Applications Through Unmanned Aerial Systems (STRATUS) Conference May 18-20 at the University of Buffalo (http://stratus-conference.com/).

In the fall, you can look forward to the 44th IEEE EDS Activities in Western NY Conference by the Electron Devices and Photonics Societies, and the Western NY Image & Signal Processing Workshop organized by the Signal Processing Society. Our Young Professionals affinity group will join the NextCorps-based Tech Startups group for casual networking over drinks on the second Thursday of each month.

Lastly, one of our goals for 2020 is to increase IEEE Rochester’s Social Media presence and member engagement. We will share more of our upcoming events and activities on our LinkedIn (http://bit.ly/ROCIEEE_LI) and Facebook (http://bit.ly/ROCIEEE_Fb) pages while overhauling our website.

March 2020 Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

The IEEE Rochester Section Joint Chapter Meeting (JCM) will take place on April 7th at RIT’s Louise Slaughter Hall from 4 pm – 9 pm. The Joint Chapters Meeting brings together all of the IEEE Societies for an evening of technical talks, networking, and a dinner keynote. Additional information on the 2020 JCM speakers and keynote is available on the vTools Event page (vTools # 220441).

Due to the timing of the Joint Chapters Meeting, the April IEEE Rochester Section ExCom meeting will take place 1 week early on March 31st (vTools # 221270).

I am happy to announce that Christine Freyda and Howard Bussey were recently appointed as Section Electronic Communication Coordinators. Chris and Howard have a large task ahead of them to grow the social media presence of the IEEE Rochester Section and overhaul the section website. I know they will both do a great job, and I thank them for volunteering.

January 2020 Newsletter

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I want to begin my inaugural “Message from the Chair” by thanking those that supported and encouraged me to take on this new role despite being the youngest ExCom member. My time as Section Secretary helped prepare me for this new role, but I have much to learn in the spotlight.

I would also like to thank the outgoing ExCom members, Sreeram Dhurjaty (Chair) and Bill Fowlkes (Treasurer), for their leadership and contributions to the Section during the past two years. Although you may not be on the ExCom, I hope you remain engaged with the Section and continue to share your experience and wisdom with the new ExCom members.

Congratulations to the returning ExCom members, Cristian Linte (Vice-Chair) and Paul Lee (Secretary), and new ExCom member Harish Gupta (Treasurer). I look forward to working with the new ExCom to achieve my goals as Chair. I hope to increase IEEE Rochester’s engagement with our student branches, young professionals, and women engineers during my two-year term. Increasing engagement among these groups is the key to evolving IEEE Rochester Section to ensure a healthy future.

I look forward to getting to know more of the engineers in the Rochester area at future events.
