LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) Tour

City: Richland

Abstract: (From the website:) The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) was designed to open the field of gravitational-wave astrophysics through the direct detection of gravitational waves predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. LIGO’s multi-kilometer-scale gravitational wave detectors use laser interferometry to measure the minute ripples in space-time caused by passing gravitational waves from cataclysmic cosmic events such as colliding neutron stars or black holes, or by supernovae. LIGO consists of two widely-separated interferometers within the United States—one in Hanford, Washington and the other in Livingston, Louisiana—operated in unison to detect gravitational waves. Agenda: Tour starts at 3pm Tour anticipated to conclude at 5PM  Location: Bldg: LIGO campus Richland, Washington

Substation Cyber Security Standards and the IT/OT merge

City: Richland

Co-sponsored by: IS5 Communications There are currently two cyber security standards that support Utility systems - NERC CIP and the lesser known IEC 62443 (ISA 99).  These were created to provide a framework to design, integrate and run cybersecurity defensive systems and training for substation personnel. To complicate matters, your traditional IT engineer has no knowledge of any of the standards or any of the typical day to day operations of an electric substation. Many new IT professionals do not understand the communications protocols and specialized IP based (and non IP) equipment used in the Utility space. We will discuss how these topics are merging within the Electric Utility (and other Industrial verticals) space.
