Workshop Opportunity for Student Branches: Intellectual Property Training and Case Studies

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office – CIPO – is offering to provide Workshops for Student Branches: Intellectual Property (IP) Training and Case Studies.
Note 1: CIPO provides the speaker and the information kit free of charge – as the organizer you would be obliged to return the completed feedback forms.
This is a terrific workshop opportunity that could be (but doesn’t have to be) organized as one of the following events or a part of such an event:
– a IEEE Student Transition & Elevation Partnership (STEP) event and/or as

– an IEEE Student Professional Awareness Conference (S-PAC) or

Note 2: The STEP, S-PAC and S-PAVe events usually get some IEEE funding, depending on your application.
I have organized 3 or 4 such workshops (usually for ½ day with an introductory presentation on IP followed by a case study and discussion) for our students and research industry partners – all were very professional in their delivery, very well received by the participants and a great opportunity to interact, learn, discuss issues and exchange ideas. So, my recommendation would be to invite students, faculty and industry to the same workshop.
CIPO provides its services free of charge – that does not prevent you from charging attendees a registration fee.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is now offering three free of charge key outreach initiatives as outlined below.
1) The Intellectual Property (IP) Bank of Speakers
These presentations developed by CIPO and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) are aimed at raising awareness of Intellectual Property by introducing basic concepts such as:
– the importance and strategic use of IP; o
– an introduction to trade secrets, patents, trade-marks, copyrights and industrial designs;
– useful resources and tips;
– links to IP publications and on-line tools; and
– contact information.
The presentation the IP speakers deliver takes approximately 1 hour.

2) Intellectual Property (IP) Case Studies as a teaching tool to engineering, science and business students at the post-secondary education level. These case studies are also very suitable for students and staff involved in research and development. The case studies shed light on the value of Intellectual property in realistic career situations. They can be easily integrated in a classroom setting or in a training session for organizations or businesses.
Request these teaching tools at www.cipo.ic.gc.ca/casestudies or contact one of the Business Development Officers in the regions. Upon availability, a trained Discussion Leader can support the delivery of the case study at no cost for you or your organization.
3) One-on-one IP information sessions are offered to engineers, business leaders, scientists, researchers, industrial designers, entrepreneurs and others so they are able to gain a better understanding of the best IP options relevant to their particular situations. This is usually done over the phone, by exchange of emails, teleconference, web conferencing, or in person, where possible.

Ces présentations de la Banque de conférenciers en PI développées par l’OPIC et l’Institut de la propriété intellectuelle du Canada (IPIC) sont conçues pour démontrer l’importance de la propriété intellectuelle (PI) en présentant des concepts de base tels que:
§ l’importance et l’utilisation stratégique de la PI;
§ une introduction sur les secrets industriels, les brevets, les marques de commerce, le droit d’auteur, et le dessin industriel;
§ les ressources et des conseils utiles;
§ les liens utiles et les outils en ligne pour en savoir davantage sur la PI, et
§ les contacts utiles.
Les présentations sont d’une durée d’une heure.

2) Études de cas
Les études de cas dans le domaine de la propriété intellectuelle de l’OPIC servent d’outils d’apprentissage pour les étudiants en génie, en sciences et en affaires au niveau universitaire. Ces études de cas sont aussi utiles pour les étudiants et les employés œuvrant dans le domaine de la recherche et du développement. Les études de cas font la lumière sur la valeur de la propriété intellectuelle dans des situations professionnelles et réalistes. Elles peuvent être facilement intégrées dans une salle de classe ou dans un atelier de formation pour des organisations ou des entreprises.

3) Session d’information individualisées sur la PI
Des sessions d’information individualisées sur la PI sont offertes aux ingénieurs, aux gens d’affaires, aux scientifiques, aux chercheurs, aux designers industriels et à toutes personnes désireuses de mieux comprendre les options qui leurs sont offertes en PI. Ces sessions peuvent se dérouler par téléphone, par courriel, par téléconférence, conférence en ligne, ou en personne, lorsque possible.
