SS02: Cryptocurrencies Security and Privacy

Cryptocurrencies are digital assets using the science of cryptography to secure transactions, create global currencies and eliminate government control and exchange rate issues. Cryptocurrency technology has been compared to the early rising of the internet with comments and arguments of the technology’s potential to disrupt multiple industries including Healthcare, Public Sector, Energy, Manufacturing and Financial Services.

Cryptocurrency, still little known and not yet regulated, offers new opportunities in terms of managing international humanitarian assistance with transparency, security and immediacy. Aid organizations will undeniably be able to respond more quickly using digital money, which arrives at email-speed, safely and transparently. Denmark sees potential for cryptocurrency in humanitarian aid and it is becoming the first donor country to move money using cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency crowd funding for humanitarian projects is spreading fast among organizations ranging from the popular Red Cross to institutions located in developing countries. In this regards, UNICEF is developing a “smart contract” that would facilitate transactions between the organization and its numerous partners for deliveries and payments through cryptocurrency.

By standardizing the security techniques and methodologies used by cryptocurrency systems around the globe, end-users will be able to easily make educated decisions about which products and services to use and with which companies they wish to align (CryptoCurrency Security Standard (CCSS)). However the security and privacy aspects of cryptocurrencies are not still fully covered. The existing vulnerabilities and security challenges, the feasibility and efficacy of the state-of-the art security solutions, current privacy and anonymity considerations in cryptocurrencies and the privacy related threats to users remain lacking in literature.
