[CSIRO RAS Seminar] Agriculture Robotics and Adaptive Grasping

CSIRO's Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group is hosting Prof. Michael Wang and Dr. Chao Chen from Monash University for a combined seminar on agriculture robotics and adaptive grasping. Adaptive Grasping with Touch Sensing and Dry-Adhesive ContactAbstract: In the field of robotic manipulation, touch sensing and contact adhesion have been considered as essential techniques for versatile capabilities of adaptive grasping and manipulation. Thanks to respective advances in optical tactile sensors and in scalable fabrication of gecko-inspired dry adhesive skins, these distinctive…

Polymer photonics – challenges and approaches for a highly scalable platform in ultradense optical communications

Recently, with the emergence of bandwidth-intensive applications such as high-resolution streaming media, 5G, cloud-based service delivery, and the Internet of Things, fiber communication network or data traffic has increased exponentially. This rapid increase in traffic in data communications highlights the increased energy demand in traditional information and communications technologies. Given the implementation cost and power consumption aspects, one of the future challenges is to continue developing core technologies such as transceiver devices and cost-effective optical components. Among the different types…

Modelling, Dynamics and Control of Aggregate Load Models

Aggregate models underpin the analysis, simulation and control of large populations (ensembles) of small loads. Of particular interest are loads that operate according to hysteresis controls, for example thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) such as residential air-conditioners. So-called bin models form the basis for such load aggregation. The presentation will consider the accuracy and fidelity of bin models. Focusing on residential air-conditioners, it will explore bin model extensions that cater for temperature delay and multi-zone interactions. Various load ensemble control strategies…
