A Life Member Affinity Group (LMAG) was formed in the QLD Section of IEEE in September of 2021. The objective of the group is to provide a way for life members to maintain their links with IEEE, and share fellowship with others who share the same professional background.

This announcement is for an innaugural event for this group. All Life Members in the South East Queensland vicinity are invited to come to meet with others at the University of Queensland. More information on the venue will be provided once the number of attendees is known. In any case, refreshments will be served. UQ is on semester break at this time, so parking on campus should not be a problem.

The main purpose of the event is to get the LMAG off the starting blocks and give LMs the opportunity to suggest the kinds of activities that they would like to see the group hold in the future. Nevertheless, to get the ball rolling I will give a (very) short talk entitled “Confessions of an Accidental Computer Scientist”. This explains how I started in the 1960s designing instrumentation for nuclear science research – but ended up pretending to be a computer scientist for the rest of my working career.
