Mission of TAB

The mission of IEEE Technical Activities is to promote development and facilitate the exchange of scientific and technological knowledge that benefits membership, the engineering profession and humanity. It includes 39 IEEE Societies, six IEEE technical Councils, seven IEEE technical communities and the Technical Activities Board (TAB).

Mission of TAB

TAB governs and oversees IEEE Technical Activities and is the largest of six major boards within IEEE. TAB’s mission is to inspire, foster and empower technology centric communities across the globe. As delegated by the IEEE Board of Directors, TAB establishes operational procedures that serve to assist the management and operation of the IEEE Societies and Technical Councils, supporting these technical communities and their activities in current and emerging technologies.

With these activities its core mission and directive, TAB influences the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical, electronics, communications, computer engineering, computer science, the allied branches of engineering and related arts, sciences, and technologies.

TAB encompasses the following directives:

  • Develop a volunteer-led environment where technical thought leaders converge and create communities for people working in the fields (Connections).
  • Solicit, refine and disseminate quality technical information (Content/Curation).
  • Organize technical gatherings to foster innovation and interchange (Competency/Coverage).
  • Foster and promote innovative technical ideas and new technical fields (Coverage).

Throughout the years, IEEE members have made substantial and notable contributions to the success of IEEE Technical Activities.  Recently, TAB established the IEEE TAB Hall of Fame Honor, providing members an opportunity to recognize colleagues who have made major contributions to IEEE Technical Activities.

Those honored are responsible for the creation, development, or advancement of the technical objectives of IEEE. Objectives include the advancement of the theory and practice of electrical, electronics, communications and computer engineering, as well as computer science, the allied branches of engineering, and the related arts, sciences, technologies and their application for the benefit of IEEE members worldwide, and for the general public.
