The Web Summit has announced a new initiative entitled ‘commitment to change’ by offering free tickets for their four conferences to 10,000 women in 2016.
Announcing the news on the Web Summit blog, Sinead Murphy wrote that she is “acutely aware that female participation in the tech sector has been and continues to be a significant issue”.
She explains that in an effort to “even the gender ratio” at the Web Summit’s four events – Web Summit, SURGE, Collision and RISE – they will be “giving 10,000 complimentary tickets to our events to women in the tech industry across the world”.
“We hope that it will, in some small way, contribute to solving the problem”.
The system works based on nominations – business people and entrepreneurs are asked to nominate “incredible female entrepreneurs” to receive an immediate free ticket, sent to their email. Those nominating can choose between the four gatherings for their nominee.
“It’s a tiny step in the right direction along a path that the tech industry as a whole needs to move down”.
Applications to nominate opened today and you can nominate a female entrepreneurhere.
Murphy has led production at the Web Summit since 2013.
