Thu 14:00 – Hydro One’s Experience on IEC 61850 Station and Future Plans

SPEAKER:

Matthew Leung, Manager- Protection and Stations Standards, Hydro One, and David Ma, Senior Protection and Control Specialist, Hydro One

ABSTRACT:

Hydro One initiated the Advanced Distribution System (ADS) project in 2011 in response to government plans on DG enablement and energy conservation. One major scope within the project is to modernize Owen Sound Transformer Station, which includes a 230kV/115kV auto transformer area and a 230kV/44kV station area. The 44kV area was chosen to implement IEC61850 in its protection and control system in both the station bus and process bus level. The station successfully went into service in 2016. This presentation will provide a high-level technical overview of the IEC61850 implementation in Owen Sound TS. It will also address risks and opportunities we observed in this project, as well as discussing Hydro One’s plan for further adoption of IEC61850.
