Student Branch Activity: IEEE PES SBC IIT Kanpur
Praket: The Knowledge Window:
Motivated by the idea “Knowledge increases by sharing but not by saving”, IEEE PES SBC IIT Kanpur has initiated a lecture series named “Praket: The knowledge window.” Praket (प्रकेत) is a Sanskrit word, which means knowledge or intelligence. Praket is a volunteer-driven initiative to create a platform, where students can enhance their knowledge and skill by sharing it with fellow students of the campus. Considering the necessity and interest of students, the lecture series is divided into three categories. Technical basics, technical experts and non-technical. In Praket, any postgraduate student can volunteer as a speaker and share his understanding of the topic of his/her own choice. As a part of Praket: The knowledge window, lecture series a talk titled “Technical Paper writing tools” by S M Ashraf (Research Scholar, IIT Kanpur) was organised on 10th October 2019. Speaker gave the overview of some tools for paper writing, editing the graphs, and create references.
Plantation Drive:
IEEE PES SBC IITK along with HEC of Hall 7 conducted a plantation drive on 29th Sep and 5th Oct 2019 within Hall 7 of IIT Kanpur and planted more than 50 plants (including different flowers, fruits, and Aloe vera). The volunteers of PES as well as the resident, participated in the drive energetically.
Education for all:
IEEE PES SBC IITK organized the “Education for all” drive on the 18th October 2019, to support the ongoing efforts by and NGO Shiksha Sopan whose purpose is to impart value-based education to the economically weaker section of the society. PES student chapter interacted with the teacher and students of the Sopan Anaupchaarik Shikshan Kendra of Sikhsa sopan. We also distributed notebooks and pens to the students. Being a noble cause, the volunteers also extended the financial support for the event.
RTDS Workshop (Hands-on Training):
IEEE PES SBC IIT Kanpur in association with IEEE Student Branch IIT Kanpur, organised a three day RTDS Workshop from 12th to 14th December 2019. The real time digital simulator (RTDS) technologies is a state-of-the-art technology for power engineering simulations. Few of these advance simulators are installed at power engineering lab of IIT Kanpur. A three day workshop was organised to train the newly joined research scholars. The workshop included 1) Introduction to real time simulations on power systems, 2) power electronic systems using RTDS and 3) advanced topics in power systems using RTDS. The session included theoretical presentation as well as hands-on training. Mr Suarabh Kesharwani, Mr. Rakesh Panda and Mr. Avinash Kumar gave the presentation and hands-on training to the participants.

IEEE PES/IAS Seminar by Dr. Soumya Shubhra Nag
IEEE PES SBC IIT Kanpur in association with IEEE PES/IAS Joint Chapter UP Section, organized an IEEE PES/IAS Seminar, by Nag, Dr. Soumya Shubhra Nag (Assistant Professor, Electrical Engineering Dept. IIT Delhi), titled “Design challenges in high power DC-DC converters” on 20th November 2019.
Dr. S S Nag, Started his talks with the basic understanding of converter and gave a detailed picture of high power DC-DC converters, it’s complexities, design challenges and the applications over wide range including medium voltage DC (MVDC) and electric vehicles (EVs). His presentation efficiently simplified a rather technical topic. While discussing the challenges involved he shows, how the non-ideal behaviour of passive and active elements along with control complexities pose several challenges in high power DC-DC converter design. His talk included several DC-DC converter topologies which are suitable for high power applications. He also gave a brief of advantages/disadvantages of wide band gap devices for high power applications.
