PES DAY History
On April 22, 2008, the ‘Power Engineering Society’ changed its name to the ‘Power & Energy Society’ to help the environment and society in terms of the Electric Power Industry. This day has been officially commemorated as “PES Day” since 2018 and a group of Volunteers from the energy industry come together to host various events based on the theme during the entire month of April. The forthcoming PES DAY is the 5th Edition of PES DAY. Every year we have seen tremendous response from students, YP and senior members from all around the world.

PES DAY 2022 Chair
In 2021, I was honored and thrilled to serve as the PES Day Chair and be recognized on an engineering industry platform as big as IEEE. Today I feel proud to pass on this baton to a fellow engineer and a fellow woman – Mercy Chelangat as the chair of PES DAY 2022. Mercy served as a vice chair for PES DAY 2021 showing her the competency to lead this work in 2022. She has been appointed as the chair of IEEE PES DAY by Julio Romero Aguero, Vice President – IEEE PES Membership & Image.
Mercy Chelangat K. is an electrical engineer with an unending interest in renewable energies, with a focus on sustainable community development and emerging trends such as Electric Vehicles and E-Mobility. Mercy possesses a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Moi University, Kenya. She specializes in Solar engineering and humanitarian development. She is also a current Masters in Development Practice student at Regis University.
Mercy has been an ardent volunteer at the IEEE Kenya Section and the IEEE Power Energy Society (PES). Mercy serves as the IEEE Smart Village Ambassador, PES Women in Power Lead for Region 8 (2020-2021) and PES Student Chapters Committee Representative for Region 8. She has overseen the piloting of the Networking without Borders PES Renewable Energy for Kids Program and WiE Student Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist program which aim to boost one on one interaction between students and professionals in engineering. She works as a Business and Fund Development Consultant in partnership with the IEEE Foundation to craft business and fund development strategies for IEEE Smart Village energy entrepreneurs. This is with a focus on productive uses of energy and cross sectoral collaboration.
As a hobby, Mercy likes to blog and engage with audiences on matters related to clean energy, concessional finance, women empowerment and community development. She recently founded the TechGaa Podcast, which aims to educate and train students and entrepreneurs on prospects in the renewable energy space.
Mercy’s work in IEEE is extensive and something to learn from. We are proud to have her lead PES Day 2022. PES Student & Professional Chapters and ambassadors have always dedicated their time and energy to accomplish a successful PES Day celebration and I am confident that they would show the same support for PES Day 2022 under Mercy’s leadership.
Cheers to more power to the future and to a successful PES Day 2022.
