PES Kerala Chapter Updates: TRIAC 2.0, TALKZ 2.0, APPEEC ’21, EXTRAAA Innings and LEAP Activities

Recently, PES Kerala Chapter has jointly organized several events, such as TRIAC 2.0, TALKZ 2.0, APPEEC ’21, EXTRAAA Innings and LEAP Activities.

IEEE PES KC, IEEE CS KC, and IEEE ComSoc KC jointly organized the magnificent second edition of the technical event, TRIAC 2.0 (Technical Revamping Initiative Aspired Concourse), co-hosted by IEEE SB CEK. The two-day event was conducted virtually on 2nd and 3rd October 2021. The event consisted of a one-day workshop covering the basics, followed by a hackathon to assess the learning process of the past day. Prof. V K Damodaran, FIE, LSMIEEE, was the Chief Guest and he inaugurated the event in the presence of the EXECOM members of all the 3 chapters. The workshops organized were Power System Analysis and Simulation using Python, Game Development, and 2D to 3D IC- Changing trends in Semiconductor IC Design. The resource person for the above workshops cum hackathons were Er. Hari Prasad (Co-Founder and CTO of Zellab Dynamics Pvt. Ltd), Vishnu V (Technical and Operations Support Officer, GADS LLP), and Mr. Radeep Krishna R (Former Asst. Professor, Dept. of ECE at Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, Tamil Nadu), respectively.

IEEE PES KC together with IEEE PES WiP community organized Power Talkz 2.0, an initiative to empower the female PES student members of Kerala section. The speaker for the session was Ms. Sruthy S Nair (NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad). She covered an introduction on energy sources and the importance of renewable energy.

As part of IEEE Day, the student team of the chapter organized an IEEE Day Quiz exclusively for the IEEE student members of the IEEE Kerala Section on 9th October 2021.

IEEE PES KC Activities

The YP community of the chapter organized various events as a part of the IEEE Day celebrations. The events kick-started with the event ‘ShowTheProject-STP’. The event aims to encourage students as well as young professional volunteers to come up with project ideas & showcase it. IEEE PES YP Kerala also launched a series of experience sharing sessions titled EXTRAAA Innings, where the PES YP Kerala core team volunteers shared their experiences as IEEE volunteers. The initial five sessions of the series were handled by Mr. Madhu Krishnan A P (Designer, IEEE PES YP Kerala), Ms. Swetha Prabhakar, (Content Team Coordinator, IEEE PES YP Kerala), Ms.Vidhya K P (Meet-up Coordinator, IEEE PES YP Kerala) Mr. Anandhu S Kumar (YP Activities Coordinator, IEEE PES KC) & Mr. Yadu Krishnan.

IEEE PES YP Kerala Activities

IEEE PES KC launched its membership development initiative. As common events, we had sessions on ‘How PES helps B.Tech Final Years’, Microsoft Powerpoint & Microsoft Excel handled respectively by Ms. Sherin Cherian, MDC, IEEE PES YP Kerala, Mr. Vyshakh T , Content Creator, IEEE PES KC & Mr. Navneeth Krishna E S, Webmaster, IEEE PES KC.

LEAP Activities by IEEE PES KC

The prestigious 13th IEEE PES Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference 2021 (APPEEC 2021) was hosted virtually by IEEE PES KC during 20–23 November 2021, with the theme Power and Energy for a Greener World. The first day of the conference kicked off with the Student Professional Awareness Activities (SPAA) Track 1 titled Project to Product coming under the general track, jointly organized by IEEE PES KC and IEEE SB Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering. SPAA Track 2: Power Up!, a Step Panel discussion including PES YP members too was organized. This was succeeded by the talk sessions on the topic “Role of AI for Clean Energy and other WiP YP initiatives to Enhance Member Elevation” organized under WiP Track.  After this we had the tutorial session on the topic “The Evolution of Li-Ion Battery Solutions for Renewable Energy Applications” was held. It was followed by the second tutorial session on “The Role of Wind Energy in Energy Transition”. Thereafter, we had the Panel Discussion on the topic “Youth Contribution in Power and Energy Sector for Green World” organized as part of the YP Track. This was followed by the WiP Track 2 – a Panel Discussion on the topic, “The Beginning of a New Era: From a Fresher to Leadership Excellence”. The second day began with the inaugural ceremony that was graced by the presence of our honorable chief guests- Saifur Rahman (2022 IEEE President-Elect), Dean Sharafi (Region Representative, Asia-Pacific, IEEE PES Governing Board), Surekha Deshmukh (Chair, PES India Chapters Council), Sarada Jayakrishnan (Chair, IEEE Kerala Section), and APPEEC organizing  committee members. This was followed by Keynote Session 1 on “Global Electric Power Sector: Engaging with Environmental Issues” by Saifur Rahman. After this Mr.Sukumar Kamalasadan, Duke Energy Distinguished Professor, Department of ECE at the University of North Carolina, handled the second keynote address on “Data-Driven Management and Control of Electrical grid with Renewables Applications”. The third day consisted of the initial sessions of paper presentation, the third keynote session was Mr. Tapan Saha on the topic, Challenges, and opportunities of Solar PV integrations to national grids Applications. The fourth keynote sessions by Dr. Surekha Deshmukh and Ranjeet Vaishnav (Director- Utility Solutions, TCS Utilities Business Unit; TCS) on “Enhancing resilience and operational flexibility with digital interventions”, Industry Workshops by Eaton, GE Digital India, and KSEBL were conducted on the fourth day. Apart from these the fifth keynote by Bikash Pal, Professor of Power Systems, Imperial College London (ICL) on “Importance of dynamic estimation and control of power networks for their stable operation”, 6th keynote session on “Integrated Power Electronics and Machine Learning Solutions for Health-Conscious Battery Management Systems and Fast Charging Applications” by Mr. Sheldon Williamson, Professor with the Smart Transportation Electrification and Energy Research Group, Department of Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada, the fourth paper presentation session & the function of the event was also organized on the final day.

APPEEC ‘21 Activities

The YP community of the chapter also organized an Idea Pitching & Quiz competition as a part of the pre-events for APPEEC 2021. Apart from that PES YP Kerala collaborated with various SBCs to organize webinars & panel discussions.
