In the Voice of Governing Board Section, we are honored to present a very informative article written by Dr. Shay Bahramirad, Vice-President of New Initiatives, IEEE PES. The article covers various important ongoing initiatives in IEEE PES, such as IEEE Smart City, IEEE Smart Village, YSEH, partnership with UN, and industry-academia collaboration. It contains a motivating introduction section that portrays the severity of some recent weather-related events all over the world. It also presents the remarkable contributions by the COVID-19 Knowledge Sharing Task Force of PES Industry Technical Support Leadership Committee.
In this issue, we received an update from IEEE PES Perú Chapter on a very successful PES distinguished lecture (DL) program attended by a large number of participants from 98 countries. The distinguished lecturer of this online webinar was Prof. Dr. Edson da Costa Bortoni, from Itajubá Federal University, Brazil and the title of the talk was “Renewable power generation and energy storage systems”.
We are covering an event reported by PES Women in Power (WiP). The virtual event “Women in Engineering Tech Summit 2020” was held in 2020 on a theme “Exploring challenges, opportunities and solutions for WIE during COVID-19”. A large number of speakers, panelists and participants from many countries attended the event.
Next, an update from the PES-HAC is presented, which covers a brief description of the three local rounds of the Humanitarian Technology Project Design Competition (HTPDC) 2021 held in three different countries. Apart from the project design presentations, the local rounds also hosted the technical talks and discussion sessions.
PES-Day 2021 technical events are going on in various parts of the world. In this issue, we are covering four PES-Day 2021 events organized by PES chapters and student branch chapters. We will be sharing the PES-Day 2021 events regularly in upcoming issues of PES Enews. I humbly request the PES-Day event organizers to send article describing the event with photographs (flyers, screenshots) and link of video recordings (if available).
In this issue with a heavy heart, we are publishing an obituary for Radhakisan S. Baheti (known as Kishan) who was a well-known scholar in the field of power systems and served as a program director at the NSF for more than 30 years.
