IEEE PES Bangladesh Chapter Organized Multiple Events to Involve Students More in Online Activities During the Pandemic
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the Election of IEEE Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES) Bangladesh Chapter (BDC) 2020 was held on 8th January at Brac University. IEEE PES BDC along with IEEE PES Bracu SBC has successfully organized a technical seminar on “Journey of Transformers from Design to Production” on January 26th, 2020. Engr. Rabiul Alam, CEO, Energypac, and Md. Jahangir Al Jilani, M.D., Reverie Power was the guest speaker. The ExCom of PES BDC attended a general meeting on May 4, 2020. Due to the locked down situation, the meeting was held virtually through ‘Zoom’. The chapter Chair Prof. Dr. Shahidul Islam Khan inaugurated the meeting.

During the pandemic, BD Chapter took an initiative to find out some ideas from the students to fight against the situation. So, an online article writing contest had been organized on the topic of “Electrical Engineering Research to Combat Corona Virus Pandemic” as a part of PES Day activities. Mr. Md. Kamrul Islam from BRACU achieved the first position in this contest. An idea contest titled “Enlight” focusing on Technical Approach to Prevent Locust Swarm is held from May 23 to June 20, 2020, in association with IEEE PES AUST SBC and IEEE PES BRACU SBC. Sanzana Tabassum from IUT achieved the winner prize and team ‘Screaming Eagle’ (Md. Mahmudul Kabir Peyal, Afrin Hossain Puspita, and Anirudha Barman) from BRACU got the runner-up position.

On August 9, 2020, IEEE NSU PES SBC with the support of IEEE PES BDC organized a virtual seminar on “Managing the Future Grid – A Balancing Act Among RE, EV, and ES“. Dr. R. Nagaraja, SMIEEE, was the Hon’ble speaker of the webinar. IEEE Power & Energy Society AUST SBC organized a webinar titled: “Power Talk – A Brief to Power Sector of Bangladesh & Overview of a Typical Thermal Power Plant“, in association with IEEE AUST SB and IEEE PES BDC on August 13, 2020. Mr. Nadir Chowdhury, DGM (Operations) of KEPCO was the keynote speaker of the event.
PES BDC is organizing the first-ever online-based data science competition ‘DataThon’ which is hosted on the Kaggle platform. To familiarize the participants with this platform, a seminar titled ‘DataThon Competition in Kaggle‘ is held on August 11, 2020, in Google Meet.
