On 22nd April 2020, the IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter at the University of Manchester hosted a webinar for the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) Day 2020. The theme of the webinar was ‘The Future of Power and Energy’. The invited speakers of the event were Dr Angeliki Loukatou, Modelling Analyst, Energy Systems Catapult, IEEE PES UK and Ireland Chapter, and two PES Day Ambassadors Mr. Keyi Wang and Miss. Uduak Akpanedet from the University of Manchester. The event attracted 98 registrations (54 IEEE members and 43 were also PES members).

The speakers shared their views on the PES Day theme for this year, which is ‘Affordable and Clean Energy to the Community’. In the following discussion session, several questions were addressed, such as Affordable or Clean, which one weighs more? What technological advances and policy changes are needed to bring clean and affordable energy to the community? What would be the approach in developing countries? The speakers also talked about the history and future of PES, the benefits of joining PES and membership guidance, and the impact of PES in different continents. The feedback of the attendees to the event was positive in general, with a good evaluation of the event, especially about the organisation and the discussion in the virtual panel session.

The speakers shared insightful ideas in the panel session. IEEE PES UK and Ireland Chapter supported the event. The presentation slides are available on the IEEE University of Manchester Student Branch Website. The video recording is available on the University of Manchester Branch YouTube channel.
