Household Electrical Problems: Fixed by Yourself
As part of the ‘1st PES WiP Brazil Month’ and the celebration of IEEE Day, a brief hands on training session on household electrical tasks held on October 3rd, 2018 at UFF, organized by IEEE PES UFF Student Chapter and WIE (Women in Engineering). The session was carried out by Letícia Fritz Henrique, a former UFF Electrical Engineering student and IEEE member. The main purpose was to make it easier for women living alone or in university accommodations to solve basic house hold electrical tasks by themselves. In order to be not only theoretical but practical, the size for this training session was restricted to a small group with facility for working individually (a small group of 9 students).

The session started with the elaboration on the electrical connections in houses. Students could practice doing wire connections and also cutting and stripping wires. They connected a lamp with the switches and the power plug in order to learn how it’s done. Now they are able to fix the power plug, change wires when they are not working, or even make their own desk lamp.

They also learned about the possible problems in their domestic electrical utilities. It was taught how to find out what the problem is and the possible solution for that. If their air conditioning is not cooling the room, if there is water leaking from the fridge or the fan is not working properly, they have enough information to solve these problems.
Participants at the end of the activity
This activity was sponsored by Red Bull. They participants seemed to have a great time during the four hours and we hope that they have practiced at their houses the things that they learnt during the course.
