The Power and Energy Society of Region 9 covers all Latin American and Caribbean Countries; it comprises of 34 Chapters that are organized in four areas:

Mexico and the Caribbean: consists of the chapters in Mexico, Centro Occidente, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Morelos, Queretaro, and Puerto Rico, Western Puerto Rico and Trinidad y Tobago. The Chapter Representative for this area is Jose Guillermo Calderon ( jgcg@iie.org. mx ) of Morelos Section, Mexico.

Central America and Panama: corresponding to the countries in the CAPANA Council: Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Guatemala.  Guadalupe Gonzales of Panama Section  (guadalupe.gonzalez@ieee.org ) is the Chapter Representative for this area.

South 1: The Southern Cone comprises  of the chapters in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, South Brazil and Minas Gerais). Due to the large distances involved in Brazil, there are five additional Joint Chapters : Bahia Northeast, Itajuba, Manaus, Rio Grande do Sul, and Santa Catarina. The Chapter Representative for this area is Glauco Nery Taranto (tarang@coep.ufrj.br) from Rio do Janeiro Section.

South 2: (The Andean part of South America), corresponding to the countries in the Andean Council: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The representative for this area is Renato Cespedes  (rcespedes@ieee.org) of Colombia Section.

Students’ Activities

The 2^nd PES Student Congress was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August. 18 student members from the Region 9 attended the meeting held on 15-17 of August.

In 2016, the “Student Participation in Regional Conferences Program” awarded 25 students from 12 countries and 39 from Mexico that received financial support to attend the 2016 IEEE PES T&D LA in Morelia, Mexico.

At that conference the students were encouraged to network with professionals and peers.

Young Professionals

Thiago Alencar ( thiago.r.alencar@ieee.org)  the Region 9 Representative for the PES Young Professionals has developed an initiative with Student Branches to form PES Student Chapters and organize joint activities with the Young Professional and local PES Chapters.

Because of this effort 5 new PES Student Branch Chapters were created only in Brazil. This initiative will most likely be replicated in other countries in the region.

Chapter leaders training
Chapter Chair Training session held in September 2016 in Morelia, Mexico was attended by 14 chapter leaders from the Region.

This is a part of the continuous training process that has been offered by the Society. It is always a good opportunity to have a face-to-face meeting with the Society Officers and be familiar with the tools and best practices to manage a Chapter.

Regional Conferences

The PES sponsors two major Technical Conferences in the Region, the IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Latin America (T&D LA) and the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Latin America (ISGT LA).

They are held every two years and the Morelia Chapter, Mexico, hosted the 2016 T&D LA in September.
The conference received 380 attendees and offered two tutorial courses, four keynote speakers, and 2 panel sessions.

The 2017 IEEE PES ISGT LA will be held in September, 20^th – 22^nd , in Quito, Ecuador.

Power & Energy Magazine Spanish version

The award winning Power and Energy Magazine published its first issue in Spanish in September, 2016. It is directed to professional engineers who are willing to keep themselves up to date with new technologies and best practices involving commercial, environmental, and social aspects of the power and energy. A brief message to the Region 9 PES members

Volunteering is the core that delivers value with high quality information and networking opportunities to the Society members.

Due to these efforts he PES is the largest society in our region thanks to the our volunteers.

The Chapters are the local and focal points to help you technically and professionally.

The PES offers dozen sets of resources to you, student, young professional and experts. Lectures by local, regional or global experts thru the Distinguished Lecture Program; tutorial courses that can be online; regional conference in your area or other products and services that may not yet be available in your country or city.
