2016 JST-NSF-DFG-RCN Workshop on Distributed Energy Management Systems
Frontiers of Multimodal Energy Systems
Heidelberg, Germany – May 23 to 24, 2016

With support of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Japan Science and Technology (JST) Agency, the Research Council of Norway (RCN), and the U. S. National Science Foundation, leading international researchers from Germany, Japan, Norway, and the United States participated in 2016 JST-NSF-DFG-RCN Workshop on Distributed Energy Management Systems – Frontiers of Multimodal Energy Systems – in Heidelberg, Germany from May 23 to 24 to investigate new system architectures and control paradigms to address the rapidly evolving power grid.  The U.S. National Science Foundation provided partial travel support for 16 U.S. faculty members to attend the workshop. Topics for discussion included renewable energy generation, the smart grid, demand response, energy storage, HVDC and supergrids, distributed controls, microgrids and various new control paradigms. This was the third is a series of joint workshops on the distributed energy management systems.  The first was conducted in January 2014, which was followed by the second one in April 2015.  A primary goal of these workshops is to learn about research activities in power and energy from the different countries and to discuss ways to leverage the on-going efforts and develop long-term collaborations to address emerging research issues relevant to the participating countries.
