Chapter Activities Recognition

Although most of the chapters have been involved with members’ technical activities some of them have also been recognized for their excellent performance.

This year, 7 Chapters have been awarded the High Performance Chapter Program.

Congratulations to the Chairs that have done an excellent job!

Chapter Chair (Program Year) Award
Bolivia Orlando Perez $400
Chile Roger Mellado-Zapata $500
Costa Rica Jose Vargas Rivas $400
Morelos Miguel Ramirez-Gonzalez $300
Panama Ivan Castillo $900
Peru Santiago Leon $600
Uruguay Pablo Thomaset $450

Most of the chapters were eligible to receive their share of funds but for some reason or the other missed the deadline or information required in the application form.

I’d like to invite the Chapter Chairs in the Region to add this matter in their year-end agenda and apply for the 2014 Program Year award by December 31, 2014.

Students’ Activities

The students play an important role in our P&E Society. The “Student participation in Regional Conferences Program” offers financial support to stimulate the student members to attend conferences held in the region. This year 41 students received support to attend the 2014 T&D Latin America Conference and Exhibition in Medellin, Colombia.

At the conference the students were encouraged to network with professionals, other students and, had a meeting with the IEEE PES President Miroslav Begovic and other PES Executive Committee Members

Student members from schools with a Student Branch should feel free to contact their PES Chapter Chair or PES Chapter Representative and form the Student Branches of the PES Chapter.

Chapter leaders training

Chapter Chair Training session held in November 2014 in Panama City was attended by 12 chapters leaders from the Region.

This is a part of the continuous training process that has been offered by the Society for a long time. It is always great to have a face-to-face meeting with the Society Officers and be familiar with the tools and best practices to manage a Chapter.

Outstanding Small Chapter Award

The PES recognizes chapters that deliver excellent services to their members. This year, Panama Chapter was awarded this distinction in the small chapter group ( less than 100 member).

The chapter received a USD 1,000 award plus USD 2,000 for travel expenses support to attend the Annual Power & Energy General Meeting; banner and plaques.

Congratulations to Leonardo Perez (past chair), Ivan Castillo (Chair) and Guadalupe Gonzales (Vice Chair) for their achievement.

Regional Conferences

The PES sponsors two major Technical Conferences in the Region, the IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Latin America (T&D LA) and the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Latin America (ISGT LA)

They are held every two years and the Colombia Section PES Chapter hosted the 2014 IEEE PES T&D LA in September in Medellin, Colombia.

The conference attracted 414 attendees from Latin America and other countries such as Brazil, Germany, Spain, US, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, México, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panamá, Dominican Republic. This edition was supported by 29 companies as patrons.

The diversity of panel sessions, 4 tutorials and 118 papers and poster presentations offered the attendees a great opportunity to discuss the current trends and needs to promote and develop Power & Energy Systems for Regional Integration.

For 2015 the IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Latin America (ISGT LA) will be held during October, 5th – 7th, in Montevideo, Uruguay.
