Student Branch leaders training at TKMCE – Jan 12th

PES Kerala Chapter supported the TKMCE hub level meet “TREADSTONE” conducted during Jan 12th & 13th at TKMCE. Hub -1 student branch leaders training held on Jan 12th was led by Prof Muhammed Kasim, Chair, PES Kerala Chapter.

Talk on ‘Computer Networks’ at TKMIT – Feb 7th

A talk on “Computer Networks” by Prof K Sasidharan, Director, Information systems, Finance Department, Govt. of Kerala was held on Feb 7th, at TKM Institute of Technology, Karuvelil, Ezhukone. Faculty members, under-graduate & Post graduate students attended the talk.

PES Kerala Chapter web site Inauguration – Feb 10th

The PES Kerala Chapter dedicated web site http://www.pes.ieeekerala.org was inaugurated by Er. N T Nair, former Chair of Kerala Section & India Council at „Harmoniee‟, Kerala Section office, Thiruvananthapuram on February 10th during the first EXECOM meeting of the newly formed office bearers for the year 2013 & 2014.

Tutorial on ‘Power Electronics’ – Feb 13th & 14th

A tutorial on Power Electronics for the students was conducted at TKM Institute of Technology, Karuvelil as part of the Educational activity of PES Kerala chapter on Feb 13th & 14th. Prof Muhammed Kasim S, Chair, PES Kerala Chapter inaugurated the tutorial. Prof P Prathapachandran Pillai of TKM College of Engineering took the sessions. Nearly 125 students participated in the program. Prof Sharat Raj, Student Branch Counselor thanked Prof Prathapchandran Pillai at the end of the program.

IEEE Awareness to first year Engineering students – Feb 19th

An awareness on IEEE & its activities was given to first year EEE, ECE, CSE & IT students of Younus College of Engg. & Tech., Kollam on Feb 19th by Prof Muhammed Kasim, Chair, PES Kerala Chapter. Nearly 150 students attended the program. The students were very impressed after understanding more about IEEE and nearly 50 students expressed their willingness to join the IEEE. Student Branch Counselor Mr. Arunchand was present during the meeting.

Seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Power & Energy’ – Mar 5th

PES Kerala Chapter jointly with the Dept. of EEE, TKM Institute of Technology, Karuvelil conducted a seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Power & Energy’ at TKM Institute of Technology, Karuvelil on March 5th.

The seminar focused on power generation, transmission & distribution systems, renewable energy sources, energy conservation and management & safe distribution of Power. Engineers from Kerala State Electricity Board, Electrical Inspectorate, faculty of Engineering colleges and students attended the seminar.

The Seminar was inaugurated by Er. C V Subramaniam, General Manager, NTPC, Kayamkulam. Dr. K K Abdul Rasheed, Principal, TKMIT presided over the function. Dr. M Jayaraju, Director, ANERT gave the keynote address on the different aspect of Energy Conservation. Prof. Muhammed Kasim welcomed the gathering. Er. A G Hareendralal, former Chair, IEEE Kerala Section spoke on the occasion. Er. Anil Kumar, AGM, NTPC took a session on NTPC. Prof. K J Varghese proposed the vote of thanks.

The seminar ended at 4.30 pm.

Talk on “IEEE Awareness & Energy Saving in Homes” at Kollam Rotarian’s meet (Mar 6th)

A talk on “IEEE Awareness & Energy saving in Homes” was conducted at the Rotary Club of Quilon Lake City on the eve of the rotarians monthly meet on Mar 6th at 9 pm. A brief introduction starting with the formation of AIEE in 1884 and IRE in 1912 & the merger of AIEE & IRE in Jan 01, 1963 to form the world‟s largest professional organization IEEE was given by Prof Muhammed Kasim, Chair, PES Chapter at the meeting. The need for energy saving for conservation and reducing the usage of energy to reduce CO2 emission were also explained. In the meeting, the need for power factor improvement was highlighted. Our contribution for the
future by adopting different energy saving methods helping to reduce global warming was also highlighted. Rotarians of the Kollam lake city belonging to Engineers, Doctors, business persons & other officials attended the meeting.

District level paper presentation – Feb 2013

District level Paper presentation contest was jointly organized by the PES Kerala Chapter & the KSEB Engineers Assn. in Feb 2013. The contest was conducted at each district headquarters with the supervision of the district coordinators. Winners & runners up at the College level & teams nominated by other Colleges participated in the district contest.

State level contest (Mar 26th)
The final of the State Level contest jointly organized by PES Kerala Chapter & KSEB Engineers Assn. was conducted on 26th March 2013.
Shri. Sasi Tharoor, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development inaugurated the Contest at the Institute of Management in Government (IMG), Trivandrum. Prof Muhammed Kasim, Chair, PES Kerala Chapter; CEEBA Director Er. G S
Ajikumar; KSEB Engineers Association President Er. Mohammed Sherief & joint Convener Er. Bhuvanachandran spoke on the occasion. PES Members, Engineers from KSEB, invited guests, students & contestants from 22 engineering Colleges participated in the event.

PES Kerala Chapter jointly with Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust organized a seminar on Electricity from Sun : Sharing Experience on April 21 at VMFT Building, Trivandrum.

ENCON ‟13 – ENERGY CONSERVATION SEMINAR

Energy Conservation Seminar “ENCON -’13” was organized at TKM Institute of Technology to give an awareness among the public especially women in and around the Institute on May 16th.

National Conference “RIPOC ‟13″

The National Conference “RIPOC ‟13″ was held on June 28th at Mohandas College of Engineering & Technology, Nedumangad. The conference supported by PES Kerala Chapter was organized by Dept. of EEE, MCET. A panel discussion on „Opportunities and Challenges in Indian Power and Energy Sector‟ was organized by IEEE PES Kerala Chapter on June 28th at MCET as part of RIPOC‟13. Prof V K Damodaran, Life Senior, IEEE PES moderated the panel discussion. Er. A G Hareendralal & Er.Suhair, Senior members of IEEE PES, Er. A M Narayanan from Energy Management Centre and Dr.Sobha Manakkal were the other eminent members of the panel.
Formal inauguration of the newly formed PES SB Chapter was done by Prof K P Pillai, Life Senior.

Personality Development Program

A personality development program by Er. Safeer Azeez, Manager, Business Systems, Qatar Airways for final year students was conducted on August 20th at TKMIT. Around 150 students participated in the event.

Workshop on Free and Open Source Software

A workshop on Free and Open Source Software by Er. Satish Babu, Director , ICFOSS for the under-graduate & graduate students of Computer Science dept. of TKMIT was conducted on August 21st. Around 175 students & staff attended.

PES QUIZ 2013

Prelims on Sept 11th

State level Quiz competition for first year engineering students. The prelims, a written test for 20 minutes duration was conducted at 54 Engineering Colleges in the state with the help of IEEE Student Branches / Principals of the respective Colleges on Sept 11, 2013. Nearly 1900 students participated at the College level competitions. Three toppers from each participant College were selected for the finals at TKMCE, Kollam on Oct 2nd.

IEEE Day 2013

“Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”.

IEEE Day celebrations were organized at TKM College of Engineering at a Hub level on Oct 1st.
Er. K V Rajendran, General Manager (Tech), Technopark was the Chief Guest. Prof Muhammed Kasim (Chair, PES Chapter), presided over the function. Dr T M Amarunnishad (Principal, TKMCE), Prof S Parameswaran, Mrs Sunitha Beevi (IEEE SB Counselor, TKMCE), IEEE Members & Student members of Hub-1 participated at the celebrations.
Er. Rayees Amarunnishad (R-10 GOLD coordiator) addressed the student gatherings.
VIBGYOR Photography Contest was included.
TKMIT Student Branch was selected for “The Student Branch of the Day” award to the best performed S B in the IEEE Day celebrations.
Mr. VIBGYOR – this program hunts for a colorful personality in every sense.

PES QUIZ 2013

Finals on Oct 2nd

113 students from 46 Engg Colleges participated in the finals.
First round-written test of 20 minutes duration. Selected the top 26.
Second round-written test of 15 minutes duration.
Final round with the 4 toppers – the 1st & 2nd round marks added together.

A talk on IEEE Awareness was given by Prof Muhammed Kasim S, Chair, PES Kerala Chapter as part of IEEE Day celebrations. An Ice Breaking session by Jayakrishnan S of IEEE S B, TKMIT during the Quiz interval. Quiz finals was conducted by Dr B Premlet, an active IEEE Member.

First Prize– Rahul Raju, TKMCE, Kollam (Rs 5000/- + certificate)
Second Prize – Devika A Nair, GEC, Barton Hill (Rs 2500/- + certificate)
Third Prize – Vishnu Prasad, TKMCE, Kollam (Rs 1500/- + certificate)
Fourth Prize – Krishna Das M – GEC, Kannur (Rs 1000/- + certificate)
Consolation prizes varying from Rs. 500/- to Rs. 100/- were given to the remaining second round participants based on their scores.

PES GOLD Meet

A meeting of the PES GOLD was held at TKM Institute of Technology, Karuvelil, Ezhukone on Nov 15th. PES Vice President Chapters, Ms Meliha Selak was the Chief guest. PES Graduate Students Members, Graduate Students & young professionals attended the meeting. Around 125 Graduate students & Young faculties attended the Meet. Er Jalaluddin Musaliar, Institute Governing Body member & Treasurer, TKM College Trust presided over the function. PES Chapter Chair Prof Muhammed Kasim offered welcome address. The inaugural address was given by Ms Meliha Selak, PES Vice President Chapters. Felicitations were given by former Principal Dr K K Abdul Rasheed & Prof Rajesh Kannan, IEEE SB Counselor, Amrita University. Prof Sharat Raj, TKMIT SB Counselor also addressed the gathering. Prof Rajesh Kannan presented a paper on ” Research Methodology” and explained about the humanitarian projects they are taking up for the benefit of the public. The meeting ended by 1.15 pm.

PES WiP Meet

The meeting of the PES WiP (Women in Power) is held at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam on Nov 15th A N.PES Vice President Ms Meliha Selak, was the Chief guest. Around 75 women including IEEE Members, PES Members, Women Professionals, teachers, IEEE Student members and other professionals participated. Dr Sobha Manakkal, PES WiP Chair, Kerala Chapter presided over the function. Dr Bijuna Kunju, Vice Chair, PES Kerala Chapter, Dr.C Usha Devi, Adviser, WiE AG, IEEE SB ,TKM College of Engg, Prof Sunitha Beevi, Jt. Secretary, WiE AG, Kerala Section were also present. A panel discussion on „Innovations in Technology for Women Security‟ was held during the meet. Dr Bijuna Kunju moderated the discussion. Ms. Meliha Selak shared her views on the topic on a global perspective. She highlighted the need to emphasize women education and professional activities. All panel members shared their views and opined that women should also take up challenging positions in public administration to effectively implement ardent measures for women security. Student members also shared their views and apprehensions regarding the safety issues faced by women in various aspects of life. It was concluded that the professional forum of “Women in Power‟ should induct “Power in Women‟.

IEEE PES Vice President – Chapters, Ms Meliha B Selak inaugurated the seminar and took a tutorial session on ”Protection Challenges involving the integration of Dispersed Generation”. Prof Muhammed Kasim, Er. Sasi P M, Dr. Jayaraju, Er. Satish Babu & Prof Sharath Raj addressed the gathering. Simon Akkara, PES Senior Member presented a paper on “Smarter Grids-Requirements & Challenges”
A panel discussion on “DC Era – an offing” was also held. Mr N T Nair moderated the panel discussion. Ms. Meliha Selak, Er. A Suhair, Er. Simon Akkara, Dr. Sobha Manakkal & Dr. Bijuna Kunju were there in the discussion group.

Faculty Development Program

A workshop on “Industrial & Power Electronics” was conducted for faculty members of Engg colleges in and around Kollam from Nov. 26 – 28. Prof. P Prathapachandran Pillai took the sessions. About 50 teachers attended the program.

National Energy Conservation Day

National energy conservation day is celebrated every year by the people all over the India on 14th of December. A talk on Energy conservation was given to the first year
B Tech students of TKMIT on Dec 14th at TKMIT by Prof Muhammed Kasim, Principal of the College.
