I had the distinct pleasure to visit with Power and Energy Society (PES) chapters around the globe over the past five years and witness the entire chapter success achieved through the volunteers’ talent and hard work.
I take with me many good memories from interactions I had with numerous volunteers from many different chapters. The position of the Vice President for Chapters is very demanding; it requires significant amount of personal time and sacrifice. Nevertheless, it was very fulfilling by providing me with many opportunities to increase the level of IEEE PES activities in many parts of the world. In addition, making new friends and expanding PES network was invaluable.
The organization of Chapters is one of the foundations for the PES activities, as demonstrated in some of the highlights below:
Resource for hosting Society Conferences & Symposia
First IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Conference in Europe organized by Sweden PES Chapter! It was a great success of Sweden PES Chapter that hosted this conference at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. Prof. Lina Bertling, PES Chapter Chair, was the Conference General Chair. Over 400 participants from 40 different countries gathered to discuss the latest innovations in smart grid technologies.
Utilize PES Chapters Outstanding Engineer Award (OEA)
The PES Outstanding Engineer Award program allows each PES Chapter an opportunity to recognize the outstanding contribution of a local engineer to the power engineering profession for the outstanding technical, professional and society contributions on behalf of the power engineering profession.
PES Vancouver Chapter presented OEA to Paul Choudhury, BC Hydro Vice President “for his dedication to the advancement of the engineering profession through leadership and industrial contributions to transmission planning and operations.”
Utilize Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP) lectures
Purpose of the DLPis to increase the knowledge of the PES members in topics that range from research to practical use of technology.
The Kolkata PES Chapter hosted Professor Hermann Dommel, PES DLP lecturer – over 200 attendees.
Host and organize the PES chapter chairs trainings
The Bangalore PES Chapter hosted Reg10 PES chapter chairs training in conjunction with ISGT-Asia2013. The Outstanding Small Chapter Award for 2012 was presented to Prof. Muhammed Kasim, Kerala PES chapter chair.
Host and organize Women in Engineering (WIE) events in conjunction with the major PES events
A PES Governing Board members, Wanda Reder, Noel Schulz, Cheryl Warren and Meliha Selak, were guest lecturers who shared their stories about career, work-family balance, importance of IEEE to their success, and the need for women in the power and energy industry at a seminar that was hosted and organized by the UAE Section/PES chapter in Abu Dhabi on October 29, 2009.There were approximately 200 women in the audience who enthusiastically asked questions, shared their experiences of engineering studies in the UAE and openly discussed their challenges to overcome adversity. Based on the women who participated and to the hope that is inspired by the simple acts of kindness, Cheryl Warren wrote the on-line book titled “Women in Engineering – You Can Do It!”
Noel Schulz, PES President, Meliha Selak, VP Chapters, Lina Bertling, PES Treasurer, Mini Thomas, PES Chapter Chair, Zuhaina Zukaria, ISGT-Asia 2014 Conference Chair with Indian Women in Power (WiP) organized by Bangalore PES Chapter and WiP.
Outstanding Chapter Award (OCA)
Each year, the PES Outstanding Chapter Award is given to the chapter that is judged to provide the greatest overall contribution and service to its members in the Technical and Societal activities, Membership Advancement, Fellow Nominations and Awards and Enlistment of new PES Members
Presentation of the award is made at each PES General Meeting and is presented by the President of the PES, VP Chapters and Award Committee Chair to the winning large Chapter Chair and small Chapter Chair at the Awards Dinner.
42 PES Chapters have been formed worldwide since 2009!
Prof. Norman Mariun initiated PES Chapter formation in Sri Lanka section. Over 50 participants, including students, were attending his technical presentation and introduction of the IEEE PES.
PES Sponsors the Student Meetings and Congresses
73 PES Student Chapters have been formed worldwide since 2009 (33 Chapters in 2013)!
