Welcome to the IEEE NPEC SC-5 Human Factors, Control Facilities, and Human Reliability Website!

Subcommittee 5 is concerned with the application of human factors engineering to the design, operation, maintenance, and testing of nuclear facilities, systems, and equipment and the related environments in which people work.  Included is the development and application of human factors engineering guidance and criteria for the design and evaluation of systems, equipment, and facilities for operations, maintenance, and testing; as well as the development of methodologies for human performance and human reliability analysis, data collection, and modeling, including model evaluation and validation. Also included is the responsibility for coordinating with other groups, including standards development organizations, the acquisition, evaluation, and application of human factors, human performance, and human reliability data for the purpose of developing and maintaining nuclear facility standards. SC-5 also supports or sponsors technical conferences and educational workshops, the preparation and review of technical papers, the dissemination of information to the nuclear industry on new developments, and the advancement of human factors engineering with students and educational organizations.
