Working Group 3.1 – Testing
Scope
WG 3.1 is responsible for the standards related to the treatment of matters relating to testing. Included is the preparation of standards, recommended practices, or guides, and preparation, presentation, and review of technical papers concerning nuclear power plant testing. Types of testing include periodic, post-maintenance, and surveillance. Also included is the preparation of guidance and requirements for design in support of testing, development of testing procedures, operational availability related to testing, and test documentation. The following standards are maintained by this WG:
- IEEE Std 336 “Guide for Installation, Inspection, and Testing Requirements for Power, Instrumentation, and Control Equipment at Nuclear Facilities”
- IEEE Std 338 “Standard Criteria for Periodic Testing of Nuclear Power Generating Stations”
- IEEE Std 1819 “IEEE Standard for Risk-Informed Categorization and Treatment of Electrical and Electronic Equipment at Nuclear Power Generating Stations and Other Nuclear Facilities”

- 336 was last published in October 2020.
- 338 was last published in 2023.
- 1819 was last published in September 2016. NRC was evaluating potential endorsement of this standard but faced opposition from some industry groups. NRC endorsement efforts have been put on hold pending the next revision of the standard. Revision of 1819 is the current focus of WG 3.1.
Meeting Information
The monthly meetings for P1819 revision development are held virtually via WebEx, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (ET), on the 2nd Thursday of the month starting March 3, 2023. Request details on how to participate in the monthly virtual meetings by contacting the WG Chair.
Bi-annual hybrid meetings (in-person with WebEx connectivity) are expected to be during January and July of each year in conjunction with NPEC.
The next WG 3.3 bi-annual meeting will be held in San Luis Obispo, CA on Tuesday, July 15, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm PT and on July 16, 2024, and from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm PT on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. The draft agenda will be posted here~30 days ahead of the meeting (or get it in iMeet).
