Edmonton Event “Insulation Coordination”

IEEE-NCS, PES/IAS Chapter Presents
Tuesday, November 26th, 2019, 6:00 to 8:30pm, doors open at 5:30pm

Abstract:

Large industrial facilities have their own medium and high voltage systems and many of them are connected to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES) at higher voltage levels than previously done.  To ensure insulation system secure and reliable design and operation, insulation coordination should be evaluated, and high voltage transient studies be should performed where applicable.  This presentation provides an introduction to aspects associated with performance of insulation coordination, selection and use of surge arrestors for the protection of electrical equipment, and applicable North America and International Standards.   The presentation also touches on other high voltage transient studies such as breaker Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV) and fast and very fast voltage transients; when to perform them, and what is needed to perform them such as necessary equipment information and required software to perform the analysis.

Speakers (Bio):

Rasheek Rifaat, IEEE Fellow:

He received a B.Sc. from Cairo University in 1972 and a M.Eng. from McGill University in Montreal in 1979 in Electrical Engineering. In 1975, he worked for Union Carbide Canada Ltd. in Quebec. In 1981, he joined Monenco Consultants Limited in Calgary, Alberta, and Saskmont Engineering Limited in Regina, Saskatchewan. He has been involved in thermal power-generating plant projects with special interest in generator protection systems and power-plant systems. Since 1991, he has been working for Delta Hudson Engineering Ltd. (Now Jacobs Engineering) in Calgary. Mr. Rifaat is a registered professional engineer in three Canadian provinces. Mr. Rifaat has published more than 25 papers on cogeneration plant protection, operation and economics and he is the current Chair of the Protection & Coordination Work Group for the revision of the Buff Book into Standard 3004 Series.

Ken Duan:

He is a registered professional engineer (P. Eng.) in Alberta. He received his B.S in Electrical Engineering from University of Calgary in 2012 and started his career as E.I.T at Jacobs Energy, Chemicals and Resources Group (Now Worley).  Since then, Xiaoke(ken) has been involved in different and challenging projects. In the past two years, Xiaoke (Ken) has been involved in an extensive Insulation Coordination Study for a large industrial user with an interconnected HV system (ISD in Alberta).
