Regional Technical Manager Schweitzer Engineering Labs

When: 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM, August 18, 2022

Abstract:

Cybersecurity is presently an important topic for critical control systems, as those found in Electric Power Systems. In the presentation, we will cover an introduction to Industrial Control Systems (ICS). It will define the differences between enterprise networks and ICS networks. Next, Cybersecurity’s purpose and core concepts are defined. These are used to illustrate how to start thinking like a defender against malicious attacks. An understanding of the anatomy of a Cyber Attack is key to visualizing the different vectors available to hackers, as well as defensive security strategies possible. Last, the presentation will analyze a case study: The Ukraine incident, December 2015, when the Ukrainian Power System Operators suffered a cybersecurity attack causing extensive damage.
