Abstract:

A very important aspect of the protection and control (PAC) of modern power systems is the communications system. The presentation will provide an overview of past, present, and future technologies for PAC power systems.  The presentation will address the needs for communications for PAC.  The overview of the technologies will follow from power-line carriers to packet-based communications.  While wide-area communications are important; presently substation IED communications are the hot topic.  A discussion of substation networks and technologies for PAC applications in the substation will be the focus.
