Women In Engineering Event

Pioneers in Skirts movie screening and discussion

Join 5 IEEE Region 3 WIE groups as we watch and discuss the movie Pioneers in Skirts!

Pioneers in Skirts is a multi-award-winning social impact film that examines the barriers and setbacks women confront in their careers, starting as early as elementary school. The film analyzes the stereotyping and sexism that can chip away at a girl’s and woman’s pioneering ambition and helps viewers understand what they (themselves) can do to change it.

Attendees will watch the movie prior to the discussion, which will be held Tuesday Oct 5 from 6:30 – 7:30pm ET (5:30 – 6:30pm CT).  The movie will be available on demand for a 3-day period beginning Saturday Oct 2.  Registration is capped to the first 100 people to register.

CBU Wins NCEES Eng Education Award Competition

Christian Brothers University has won a $10,000 award for the 2021 National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Engineering Education Award competition. The faculty, staff, and students at Christian Brothers University Engineering Department and University of Tennessee Health Science Center, along with the engineering professionals who have taken part in Go Baby Go – MROC project are to be celebrated for their work on such a worthwhile project. The purpose of this project was to design, build, and implement an upgrade to commercially available ride-on vehicles for disabled children of ages 13-months to 3-years. The solution involves supplying the children with Modified Ride-On Cars. (MROCs). MROCs are customized electric toy cars that are altered to accommodate the specific needs of individual children. MROCs are an ideal alternative to purchasing expensive motorized chairs that many families cannot afford.

Memphis Section News From SouthEastCon

Memphis students did exceptionally well at this year’s SoutEastCon Student Competitions!

Christian Brothers University students did and outstanding job in the Technical Presentation Competition at IEEE SoutheastCon 2021:

Congratulations to Rosemarie Wiethop, an Electrical Engineering student at Christian Brothers University, for winning second place with “Mirroring for Solar Space” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoW1J1BeP04&t=2s).

As well as congratulations to to Brandy Washington, an Electrical Engineering And Computer Science student at Christian Brothers University, for winning third place with “Home Sewing Efficiently with a Pattern Cutting Robot” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V80lFj3k–0)

And congratulations to the following Christian Brother University Student for being finalists in the Technical Presentation Competition:

Christian Brothers University also won the Community Outreach Competition at SoutheastCon. Congratulations to Min-Seo Song Min-Seo and Stacy Okai, Electrical Engineering students, with the Data Logging with Go Baby Go blog (gbgdatalogger.ieeecbu.org). The project aspires to design, build, and implement an upgrade to these vehicles that the children will be using. The blog provides a platform for students to share ideas to create and install components and features to enhance Go Baby Go vehicles used by children with limited mobility. CBU/ The University of Tennessee Health Science Center encourages participation in this project through the blog at Data Logging with Go Baby Go – Customizing Toy Cars for Kids with Limited Mobility.

The University of Memphis also did exceptionally well, wining Third Place in the Hardware (Robotics) Competition as well as Second Place in the T-Shirt Competition.

Congratulations to all the winners!
