Message from Chairman, IEEE Madras Section – Dr. P A Manoharan

Greetings to all the fellow, life senior, senior, professional and student members of IEEE Madras section, it is because of your strength and support, IEEEMadras section was awarded as “LARGE SECTION”during the year 2017.  I wish further increase in strength of total members should be made possible to propose and award IEEE Madras section as ‘VERY LARGE SCTION”. I thank all the members elected me to take charge as the Chairman, IEEE Madras section -2018. Incidents of this IEEE EXECOM 2018 election shows that elevation to leadership is not by professional position and its upgrade, it is because of activities and service rendered. It also emphasizes that IEEE gives an opportunity, has the platform for the talented individuals to contribute suitably by networking with the professionals.

IEEE aims to fostering technology towards humanity, by industrial standards, conferences technical papers, newsletters, symposiumsworkshops viz.. . Ground level support is from the UG student members and they will be futuristic leader to take up the IEEE executive positions. Education institutions are governed by university norms may not run in parallel with the technology growth of industries, which are expected to have revolutionary changes within span two years, not in decades.

Industries also finding difficulties in job placement to the freshersas they expects industry ready skills from the young aspirants moves out from Engineering Colleges, they understood and to overcome facts, few industries are ready to support by collaborating with education institutions and to provide creation of lab faculties and centre of excellence (CoE) by donating their products in the college campus. Unlike few decades ago the industries use to dump the out dated machineries, lab equipments and electronic gadgets to the education institutions. Presently situation is changed that industries are coming forward to sponsor and establish a brand new machineries like robots in the colleges to show case their product and technology for the development purpose. Additionally they are conducting training programs, in fact they would like to work with IEEE to identify the colleges.Students exposure from CoE in the college campus during the course work, leads to understand the firmware, design, operation & maintenance and in some cases they become entrepreneurship development and they are ready to establish start-up industries. These activities are very well adopted by the youngest education institutions started recently or revamped with the new management group. I request the remaining educations also can promote and establish the CoE with the industries tie-up.

IEEE is ready to support the development activities by technical sponsoring, in few cases with financial support as laid by the approved procedures. I strongly feel that we are diluting the issues by conducting programs by creating number of hubs and celebrating functions kind of activities rather than purposeful. Instead of spending on programs like hub congress, we can utilise this fund to conduct training programs at four Govt.Engineering colleges, mostly situated at the city centres, different places across Tamilnadu and Puducherry  can be selected to have better logistics support and to ease the candidates participation.  Best wishes to all IEEE members, expecting your kind cooperation to serve you better.
