YP Field Data Collection Trip 2024

IEEE-Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE-GRSS) is conducting a field visit to Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary and Angul town in Odisha for PG students and Research Scholars from educational institutions in Odisha and West Bengal from 16th to 18th of June 2024. The students shall be accompanied by few faculty members (from IIT Bhubaneswar & IEEE-GRSS).

Introduction: In recent times, remote sensing techniques have found wide applications for various observational research and conservation strategies through the use of satellites, namely, forest canopy assessment, carbon mapping, vegetation mapping, wildlife conservation, forest-fire detection, ecosystem restoration and climate change analysis. These data sets are usually obtained from satellite based sensors with high spatio-temporal resolutions which need ground truth data sets for validation.

Aims and Objectives:
• Familiarisation of students with existing ecosystem and methodologies to obtain ground truth data from a pristine environment like the forest ecosystem for remote validation of satellite observations.
• Train students working in the field of remote sensing with techniques for ground truth data collection and validation.
• Contrast the contribution of various land classes, vegetation vis-à-vis urban, to regional heating and climate change phenomena

During the field visit, parameters like land surface temperature, tree height, canopy spread and meteorological parameters shall be collected using a variety of in situ instruments in two environments (forest and urban) while training the students in the same. This will contribute in generating skilled human resource to carry out advanced research in the country in this very important field.

For the field visit:
1. Trip will start at Bhubaneswar and end at Bhubaneswar and consist of rail and road travel.
2. Shared/dormitory accommodation with common toilet facility will be provided at the site.
3. Participants need to carry their Aadhar card and student ID card with them mandatorily.
4. Participants need to strictly adhere to the forest rules and be under the control of the instructors.
5. Participants need to carry their own sunglasses, caps, shoes and rainwear mandatorily.
6. Participants will be responsible for their own safety during the entire trip.
7. Participants should be ready to spend some minimal charges for entry fees etc. if required.
8. Anyone with health issues should avoid the trip.
