Surgical Robotics: A Haptic System for Eye Surgery Training

Abstract: One of the main research themes at the Advanced Robotics and Automated System (ARAS) group is surgical robotics. Our surgical robotics research group aims at developing new robotics-based technologies for robot-assisted surgery and surgery training applications. This includes design and implementation of mechanical and electrical components as well as development of innovative control structures for these systems.  In this talk, a brief overview on control architectures for improved transparency in bilateral teleoperation systems will be introduced and the stability analysis of such systems will be discussed. Then the current project of the group on Haptic System for Eye Surgery Training will be presented with special focus on the development of a robotic-assisted eye surgery system. The mechanical design of this system and its novel bilateral teleoperation control structure will be elaborated in this presentation.  Our collaboration with the surgeons and engineers in Farabi Eye Hospital, the Center of Excellence in Ophthalmology, and BioRobotics Research Laboratory at Queen’s University is a valuable and constructive asset for this project. This project has been funded by Iranian National Institute for Medical Research Development and Iranian Research Network in Ophthalmology.

Speaker Bio: Hamid D. Taghirad received his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1989. He received his M.Sc. in mechanical engineering in 1993, and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1997, both from McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He is currently a Professor and the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, and the Director of the Advanced Robotics and Automated System (ARAS) at K.N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran. He is a senior member of IEEE, the chairman of Control System Society Chapter in IEEE Iran Section, member of the board of Industrial Control Center of Excellence (ICCE), at K.N. Toosi University of Technology, Editor in Chief of Mechatronics Magazine, and a member of the Editorial board of International Journal of Robotics: Theory and Application and International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems. His research interest is robust and nonlinear control applied to robotic systems. His publications include five books including Parallel Robots: Mechanics and Control, and more than 200 papers in international Journals and conference proceedings.
