The Jamaica Chapter

The Jamaica Chapter of the IEEE Communications Society was established 2nd November 1998. Mr Dennis Hartley (initiator and organizer) was appointed Interim Chapter Chair. The signatories to the petition for the establishment of the Chapter (charter members), were: Robert Arnold, Hugh Brand, Oral Case, Carolyn Ferguson, Devon Gayle, Richard Gibbs, Dennis Hartley, Christopher Narinesingh, Marlon Neil, Densil Paragh, Dave Reece, Wilfred Roberts, Sherburn Silvera, Winston Smith, Howard Taffe, and Daniel Tulloch-Reid. The first executive officers of the Jamaica Chapter were; Dennis Hartley (Chair), Winston Smith (Vice Chair), and Winston Browning (Secretary/Treasurer).

Activities

The Jamaica Chapter engages its members through activities which foster an exchange of knowledge and information on state-of-the-art and emerging communications technologies. Technical experts are invited to share their knowledge with professional and student members through presentations at conferences, meetings, seminars, and workshops. Chapter activities also enable the personal and professional growth of members by providing opportunities for networking (locally and internationally), and voluntary service. Members are encouraged to avail themselves of the many benefits of ComSoc membership. The Jamaica Chapter won a ComSoc Chapter Achievement Award in 2003.


The IEEE Computer Society

The Computer Society is dedicated to advancing the theory and application of information-processing technology and to fostering international communication, cooperation, and information exchange. It meets the development needs of today’s computing researchers and practitioners with technical journals, magazines, conferences, books, a digital library and certified professional programmes. The CS Digital Library (CSDL) is an excellent research tool, containing more than 250,000 articles from 1,600 conference proceedings and 26 CS periodicals going back to 1988. The Jamaica Chapter

The Jamaica Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society was established March 19, 2002. Dr Michael Craven (organizer) was appointed Interim Chapter Chair. The signatories to the petition for the establishment of the Chapter (charter members), were: Winston Browning, Owen Clashing, Mervyn Curtis, Michael Craven, Charmaine DeLisser, Amlim Forrest, Dennis Hartley (initiator), Terrence Knight, Halden Morris, Milverton Moore, Ezra Mugisa, Wilfred Roberts, Sherburn Silvera, and Winston Smith.

Activities

The Jamaica Chapter through its members organizes activities in support of the technical and professional needs of local ICT practitioners. These activities include; promotion of the Society’s technical resources, expert presentations at conferences, meetings, seminars, workshops, and public fora. Members are encouraged to access free IEEE Computer Society distance learning courses, online books, publications and other career enhancing resources. Student members are eligible to receive Society awards and scholarships. The activities of the Chapter also provides members with opportunities to network with ICT experts (locally and internationally), and to offer voluntary service.


The IEEE Education Society

The IEEE Education Society is an international organization that promotes, advances, and disseminates state-of-the-art scientific information and resources related to the Society’s field of interest and provides professional development opportunities for academic and industry professionals. The Education Society’s FIELD OF INTEREST shall be:the theory and practice of education and educational technology involved in the effective delivery of domain knowledge of all fields within the scope of interest of IEEE. The Jamaica Chapter

The Jamaica Chapter of the IEEE Education Society was established May10, 2010. Dr Halden Morris (initiator and organizer) was appointed Interim Chapter Chair. The signatories to the petition for the establishment of the Chapter (charter members), were: Paul Aiken, Richard Brown, Daniel Coore, Charmaine DeLisser, James Douglas, Vincent Hewitt, Halden Morris, Milverton Moore, Milton Richardson, Wilfred Roberts, Noel Sinclair, Wessel Thomas, Windsor Thames, Daniel Tulloch-Reid and Damith Wickramanayake.

Activities

The activities of the Chapter include workshops, seminars, presentations, as well as social functions. The Jamaica Chapters provides the Education Society members with valuable opportunities to network at a local level – with regards to the Society’s fields of interest, which include: educational methods, educational technology, instructional materials, and educational and professional developments within electrical, computer, and communications engineering, and allied disciplines.
