Rounf table: Are Algorithms Embedded Opinions?

The rapid expansion of consumer Internet over the past two decades has led to the explosion of algorithmic decision-making and predictions on individual consumers and behavior. The algorithms that make these judgments are programmed by people and thus often reproduce human biases, even if unintentionally. Indeed, a growing body of evidence demonstrates that algorithmic systems can propagate racism, classism, sexism, ableism, and other intersecting forms of discrimination that cause real-world harm.  Although numbers are supposed to be a black and white concept, no data is apolitical when collected by people. And people decide what counts as data and how, where, when, and why it should be gathered, sorted, and used. Algorithms are not autonomous technical objects, but complex sociotechnical systems. Indeed, data-driven changes to social knowledge also have major implications for injustice and inequality in the social world.
