Dr. Julian Weber, BMW Group (Head of Innovation Projects E-Mobility)
Dr. Julian Weber is currently a member of the management team of project i, BMW Group’s E-Mobility think tank and product line that has created the all-electric Megacity Vehicle i3 and the plug-in hybrid sports car i8. As Head of Innovation Projects E-Mobility, his main responsibilities include:
- Fostering innovative products, functions and services for the brand BMW i
- Operation of the international MINI E and BMW ActiveE electric vehicle pilot fleets
- Technical and commercial evaluation of new E-Mobility related business areas such as the reuse of used vehicle batteries in stationary energy storage systems (“Battery 2nd Life”)
Dr. Weber began working for the BMW Group in 1997 as an In-house Consultant and since then has served in different management positions where he was responsible e.g. for Experimental Vehicle Build for MINI and BMW 1 and 3 Series, Purchasing Strategy and Innovation Management North America (located in Spartanburg, South Carolina), Strategy and Processes for Vehicle Electrics/Electronics and Driver Environment, and group-wide Product Strategy for Electric Vehicles.
After graduating in Mechanical Engineering with a major in Design and Development at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, he received a doctorate at the Karlsruhe University, Germany. Dr. Weber is an Adjunct Professor at Clemson University – International Campus for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville, SC (USA), where he lectures graduate courses in Automotive Development and has published numerous papers as well as the book “Automotive Development Processes”.

Kalman Gyimesi, IBM (Software Group lead worldwide strategy and development of Industrial solutions)
Previously led the development of new business research for automotive clients, at IBM’s Institute for Business Value where he published 7 major research studies and is one of the lead authors for Automotive 2025. He has over 20 years of experience leading the implementation of complex business solutions. Other leadership roles at IBM include business development for RFID technology, commercialization of Intellectual Property assets and the development of Supply Chain solutions. Mr Gyimesi has been on the core team of three new product introductions and several service offering releases. He has led advanced planning implementations and has managed numerous process improvement, transformation and strategic initiatives through his career. He has a B.S. from the State University of New York and an M.B.A. from Syracuse University.
Dr. Jae Seung Lee, Toyota (Research Institute of North America Manager)
Jae Seung Lee is leading electronics research in Toyota Research Institute of North American as a research manager. Jae established and expands power electronics and advanced sensor research of Toyota in USA.
His current research focuses are high power density power module, vehicle application for wide bandgap devices, high power vehicle charging technology, wireless power transfer for vehicle charging, efficient energy management, advanced radar sensor for autonomous driving etc. He recently completed ARPA-E awarded 3 year project on SiC high power battery charger for PHEVs with an order of magnitude improved power density.
He also researches on in-motion wireless charging technology for EVs and PHEVs energy transfer. In 2012, his team awarded DOE VTP program on this project. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California Davis.
Prof. C.C. Chan, FREng, FIEEE, FIET, FHKIE, University of Hong Kong
Prof. C C Chan holds BSc, MSc, PhD, HonDSc, HonDTech degrees. He has had over 50 years academic and industrial experience. He is currently Honorary Professor and Former Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Hong Kong, and the Past President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
He has served as Visiting Professor of a number of well-known universities around the world, including MIT, University of California Berkeley, University of Cambridge, etc. He is Founder of the World Electric Vehicle Association. He also serves as Senior Consultant to governments and industries worldwide.
Prof. Chan is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, U.K., the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Ukraine Academy of Engineering Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Engineering and the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. He is a Fellow of IEEE, IET and HKIE. He received the IEE International Lecture Medal in 2000 and delivered lectures on electric vehicles worldwide. He was selected as one of Asia’s Best Technology Pioneers by Asiaweek in 2001, named as “Father of Asian Electric Vehicles” by Magazine Global View, named as “Pitamaha (Grandfather) of Electric Vehicle Technology” in India. He received the “Environmental Excellence in Transportation Award” from the Society of Automotive Engineers U.S.A. in 2007; Gold Medal by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 2010; Medal for Engineering Excellence by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) in 2013; and the Royal Academy of Engineering Prince Philip Medal in 2014.
Gernot Spiegelberg, Vice President Corporate Technology, Electrical Car and Integration into Infrastructure, Siemens AG,Munich
Award“Senior Diesel Fellow” and member of professorship at IAS (Institute for advanced Study) at TU Munich, project “Innotruck”and3PhDs. Lecturer of topics regarding disruptive technologies on processes (University of St.Gallen). Member of the Board in VDE/GMM.
Presentation will address, the substantial basics for a holistic approach to achieve the widespread introduction of electric mobility. A conceivable scenario for the implementation will be explored which consists of a combination of “smart eCars with smart traffic management and smart grid connection”. In this, the usage of the energy storage battery can play an important role in the synergy of various tasks.
Grzegorz Ombach, Vice President of Engineering , global research and development Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) technology, Qualcomm
Dr. Ombach joined Qualcomm in April 2012 from Brose Fahrzeugteile, where he managed the design of automotive electric drive systems as Director of Advanced Development Drives. Prior to Brose Fahrzeugteile, Dr. Ombach was Principal Expert for Electromagnetic Simulation and Motor Design at Siemens VDO Automotive AG. Dr Ombach’s responsibilities included management of a panel of experts in charge of electric drive systems for automotive at the company. Dr. Ombach holds a MSc. in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Lodz, Poland, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Silesian University of Technology, Poland. Dr. Ombach has authored and coauthored over 70 papers and holds more than 25 patents (awarded and pending) on automotive electrical systems.
Presentation shall discuss requirements and potential solutions for interoperable wireless charging systems for electric and plugin hybrid vehicles. Such technology is known as resonant magnetic induction charging, also referred to as wireless electric vehicle charging (WEVC). Inductive charging technology, when deployed effectively, offers a highly efficient way to wirelessly charge EVs.
