As part of planning to organize a Student-Led Conference at the University of Manitoba the group’s Chair Ms. Radwa Abdalaal was invited to attend and volunteer in the annual Student-Led Conference in Illinois to gain experience. The Manitoba Power and Energy Conference was proposed by Dr. Peter Magyar, the IAS Director of Chapter Development and the past Chair of Chapters and Membership Department. Radwa attended the IEEE Power and Energy Conference at Illinois (PECI) 2019 that was held in Champaign, Illinois, as an IAS information desk volunteer. The information desk was set up for distributing IAS printed material and providing information regarding the society. The IAS desk received a lot of attention, and the attendees received a one-year free promotion code to join IAS. Continue reading IAS Information Desk Volunteer in PECI→
Dr. Peter Magyar, theIndustry Applications Society (IAS) Director of Chapter Development and the past Chair of Chapters and Membership Department, had a visit to the University of Manitoba to inaugurate the IEEE IAS Student Branch Chapter (SBC). He gave a presentation and a short overview of IAS, membership statistics demonstrating the actual status and the membership and chapter development trends. The talk was very inspiring and showed many examples of IAS activities around the world.Continue reading Inauguration Meeting of University of Manitoba SB IAS Chapter→

Events (4&5) are two outreach events “Go Green for Juniors” that have been organized in collaboration with IEEE WIE Winnipeg Section. The program is intended to be delivered to Elementary school kids. “Go Green for Juniors” program aims to:
Inspire kids to seek engineering and science in their academic interest.
Teach kids about how to use the environment resources in a way to reduces pollution and promotes sustainability
Inspire kids to make responsible decisions and take actions in their daily activities that help the environment.
The IEEE Winnipeg Section hosted the largest event of the year to celebrate “IEEE DAY” in coordination with the IEEE Winnipeg Section ambassador Payam Alavizadeh. The event was organized by IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE), IEEE Industry Application Society Student Branch Chapter (IAS SBC), UM IEEE Student Branch (UMIEEE) and IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), Winnipeg Section. This was the 10th anniversary of IEEE Day, which was held on the theme of “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”.Continue reading IEEE DAY→
The University of Manitoba IEEE IAS SBC sponsored a guest lecture as part of the “Modern Control of Power Electronics Systems” Course for graduate students. Dr. River Tin-Ho Li, who is an expert in power electronics converter topologies and semiconductor devices, was invited to the University of Manitoba as the speaker by IEEE IAS SBC’s advisor Dr. Carl Ho.
Dr. Li gave a very informative and detailed three hours lecture about MOSFET switching techniques. 15 graduate students attended this lecture.
The University of Manitoba IEEE IAS SBC organized a technical seminar on EV fast charging technology for electrical engineering students. Dr. River Tin-Ho Li, who is an expert in power electronics converter topologies and efficient switching techniques for low voltage applications, was invited to the University of Manitoba as the speaker by the IEEE IAS SBC’s advisor Dr. Carl Ho. On Wednesday, October 30, 2019. A basic PCB soldering workshop was conducted by IAS volunteers, led by the group’s secretary Mr. Hafis Umar-Lawal. It held in the ECE Capstone Lab (E1-465) and was attended by 15 University of Manitoba students from 6 PM to 9 PM. Hafis delivered a short lecture on Basic Soldering concepts such as moisture ingression, oxidation, thermal cycling, and safety, as well as soldering/inspection procedures, for standard through-hole and surface mount devices. Pizza and pop were served to attendees, and a hands-on practice session was facilitated after the break.Continue reading Basic Soldering Workshop→
The University of Manitoba IEEE IAS SBC was pleased to announce its “Introduction to PCB Design Workshop”. The workshop gave basic knowledge and introduced basic skills for those who are interested to learn the basics of the Printed Circuit board (PCB) design. In this workshop, we outlined the basics of PCB design, including an introduction to Eagle PCB design software (open source), develop schematics, routing PCB and design rules. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Ken Siu who has 10 years’ experience in PCB design.
