Research Sharing Session-March

The Joint IA/PEL NUS student branch chapter organized a research-sharing session for the students and staff of the Power and Energy Systems area of ECE, NUS on 21st March 2017. In this series, researchers share the research work they are doing. This would help them get candid feedback on their research and develop new solutions.


The session was attended by 25 participants. The speakers and their topics were following.

Typhoon HIL Hands on Training

Typhoon HIL team with Participants

The Joint IEEE IAS/PELS Student Branch Chapter at NUS hosted Typhoon HIL for a hands-on training at National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore on 25th April 2017. The training was conducted by three guests from Typhoon HIL:

The participants were taught to use the typhoon HIL award-winning toolchain to model power electronics devices, develop visual tools to test these models in real time and automate testing. In addition to that, all the attendees received a 1-year free license for Virtual HIL software.

It was a full day training and was attended by 23 participants. The event received a positive feedback from the participants as it offered value addition to their research work. The student branch plans to organize similar events on a regular basis.

IEEE Day by IAS INSAT SB Chapter

Topic: IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”

IEEE Day: Celebrating the first time in history when engineers worldwide and IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884.

IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next. IEEE Day 2016 is the 7th edition of the same.

As every year since we established our Student Branch at INSAT, we celebrated this global event, but this year IEEE IAS INSAT SB Chapter took part in the celebration. We seized the occasion to make members and INSAT students know about Industry Applications Society and about our chapter activities.

We organized our information desk and decorated with flyers, IAS INSAT banner and with a special board that contained pictures of our special moments within IAS INSAT SB Chapter since its establishment in 2014. We invited students to our desk, provided them with information and answered their questions.

We also had IAS photo booth for every student who came to our desk. This organization was made successfully by IAS INSAT SB Chapter members and by Skander Khelil, IAS INSAT SBC vice chair and Ahmed Khabkhab IAS INSAT SBC Logistics & Treasury manager.

LabVIEW Training Sessions

Engineering is dedicated to meet humanity needs. Thus engineers must master several tools to contribute effectively to the advancement of technology, to stay ahead of the curve, to think beyond current challenges and to develop solutions for the future. Therefore, IEEE IAS INSAT SB Chapter organized a series of training sessions in LabVIEW in collaboration with National Instruments (NI) program LSA (LabVIEW Student Ambassador).

The LabVIEW Student Ambassador (LSA) Program empowers engineering students to learn the LabVIEW graphical programming environment used by millions of engineers and scientists to develop sophisticated measurement, test and control systems. The student will provide fellow students and faculty members on campus with a series of workshops giving them the opportunity to achieve LabVIEW proficiency, certification and product support.

The workshops were conducted by Hichem BILLALI, who is LSA, senior year student in Industrial Computing & Automatic Control at INSAT and our friend.

Participants learned the basics of LabVIEW, they learned how to develop applications with the LabVIEW graphical development environment and created applications using the “state machine” design template.

We also invited Mr. Mehdi BOUZID, who is area sales manager at NI for a special workshop “Do Engineering” on 8 February 2017. The topic of the workshop included NI myRIO features and applications, he also gave us an introduction to NI myDAQ and in the end of the workshop an insight into ‘NI Technology preview‘. And of course his presence was so valuable, Mr. Mehdi answered all our questions concerning NI Student Design Contest: NI Graphical System Design Musabaka 2017 and about his journey as an engineer in National Instruments.

IoT Workshop @ National Institute of Applied Science and Technology, INSAT

Topic: Internet of Things

You’ve likely heard the phrase “Internet of Things” -or IoT- at some point, but you might also be scratching your head figuring out what it is or what it means.

Aware of the importance of this promising paradigm, IEEE IAS-INSAT Student Branch provides its members and all INSAT students with the opportunity to have a closer look on this topic by offering them a workshop on IoT conducted by Pr. Farouk Kamounk and Dr. Naceur Chafroud.

The objective of the workshop is to give the opportunity to students to learn about the new challenges in IoT and to exchange ideas on the recent and future advances of IoT.

During the workshop, Pr. Farouk Kamounk, who is co-founder of IoT Tunisia, the chair of IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Tunisia Chapter and the president of SESAME University, presented an explanation of Internet of Things and its applications in the field of health sector and intelligent cities. He gave us an insight into new concepts related to the Internet of NanoThings (IoNT) and the Internet of Bio-NanoThings (IoBNT). Pr. Farouk concluded his presentation with inviting us to participate in IoT Tunisia Forum which is an event and an opportunity to bring industry leaders together with national and international experts to work together and build networks and partnerships.

Then, Dr. Naceur Chafroud, who is working at Cynapsys- a Software engineering company, – presented an application in IoT Transportation “SMART Parking”.

It is an intelligent Parking Management system. Thanks to a mobile application or a web interface, drivers can, via their telephone or via the Web, find the best parking position of their vehicle (Floor, the nearest place, handicapped place), whatever the shape of the car park.

The workshop was both enjoyable and informative.

Women In Industry

International Women’s Day, 5th March 2017

“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,” says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem.

Thus International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action, whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century, and continues to grow from strength to strength.

As a celebration for this sacred day, IEEE IAS INSAT SB chapter in collaboration with IEEE WIE INSAT Affinity Group organized “Women in Industry”. An event that cherish the women’s work and contribution in the industry as engineers and leaders.

Since it is very important to connect with other female professionals who’s taking the step forward in the engineering fields and industry, we invited Mrs Nejiba BOUZAIANE KHALFALLAH.

Mrs Nejiba is the general manager of EPI Solutions, a certified trainer at UNIDO, a master trainer at Women’s Enterprise for Sustainability, a telecommunication engineer but before all she’s a leader and a loved mother and wife.

During our talk, Mrs Nejiba told us her story and struggle to gain her position in the industry and build her first company in the 90’s after her trip to USA. She encourage all attendees to pursue their dreams and ambition and never underestimate their self “Be Bold for Change”.

Mrs Nejiba highlights the fact that being a woman and engineer is neither that easy nor that hard. Because as an engineer you have the tools to change the world and to solve humanity’s most faced problems. In the other hand as a woman, everything that you’re about to do will have a deep impact on the society and on the other girls and women who follow your steps.

After our talk, we watched a movie “Hidden Figures” which is a biographical drama film. It is a story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the early years of the U.S. space program.



Industrial visit to Valeo DAV Tunisia

About the visit:

IEEE IAS members had 2 industrial visits to Valeo Ben Arous, which is an important supplier, providing a wide range of products to auto manufacturers and after-markets.

The visit was insured by the HR general services coordinator Mr. Amine Belhadj. Thanks to the visits, we gained a better understanding of the company and its operations. It was both enjoyable and informative.

During the 1st visit we’ve met Mr. Sofiene NASRAOUI -Quality Engineer at Valeo- who explained to us the working of some machinery, allowing us to understand the functioning of different process and get answers to our questions.

Also we’ve met Mr.Abdel Karim MESKIN -Research & Development Engineer at Valeo- .Thanks to his detailed explanation that enabled us to know the role of R&D engineer which is creating new business opportunities by researching and inventing new engineering and manufacturing methods, as well as applying new knowledge and technology to improve existing methods.

During our 2nd visit to the company, Mrs Khouloud MANAI, HR coordinator welcomed us and presented the new changes in Valeo since last year. After that, Mr. Wassim TARHOUNI –Industrial maintenance engineer at Valeo- took us on tour and provided us with information, explaining some of manufacturing process. We were so glad to have the tour with Mr. Wassim since he was a student at our University (graduation 2014). Therefore he gave us priceless advices of how to succeed our studies at INSAT and achieve our goals after university.

Industrial visit to MARQUARDT Tunisia

Details of visit:

Place: Marquardt Tunisia, Industrial Zone-El Agba 2087, El Hrairia, Tunis, Tunisia

About the visit:

An industrial visit was carried out at Marquardt Tunisie in ZI El Agba, on 26th April, 2017. The main objective behind the visit was to make students aware about how various activities related to manufacturing equipment, supply chain management and the production of injection molded components are carried out in the company and give them an insight into the automotive industry.

During the visit Mrs. Samia-Communication Manager- and Mrs. Leila -Industrial engineer- guided us and shared information about the company and the manufacturing process at MARQUARDT Tunisia.

Marquardt Tunisia has many years of experience in the assembly and production of injected molded components. The company takes pride in its new Research and Development Department which offers services to customers in the field of switches, sensors and controls. In order to get in touch with practical application , IAS VJEC SBC conducted an industrial visit to ‘SARK CABLE PVT LTD’ Palakkad .From there we observed the industrial procedures  dealt  with the processes in making cables required for different purposes in electrical field. The students were divided into two batches. Each batch was guided by the staff from that industry. The visit was conducted under Mr. Nikhil Valsan K, chapter advisor VJEC SBC.


IAS VJEC SBC’s Visit to Install Tech

An industrial visit was organized by IAS aiming at improving the practical application of student’s

knowledge. This journey was to ‘INSTALL TECH’ located at Palakkad. The industrial visit team was accompanied by 4 staff members- Mr. Nikhil Valsan, Mr. Jobin Rocky, Mr.Jithin and St. Ancelin of EEE department. The visit was conducted on 26th February 2014.

INSTALL TECH consists of equipments and machines that were used in big industries. There we came across switches, MCBs, ELCBs, panel boards etc. Two guides explained the working of different equipments.

The industrial visit was a great success and we gained a lot of ideas, knowledge and information of various things by this industrial visit.
