IAS Annual Meeting 2017

Annual Meeting is an Industry Applications Society conference, which happens takes place every autumn for 53 years now and is kind of tradition for a lot of us. It is a successful conference in terms of attendees, technical sessions, student program, as well as committees meetings and social functions. The main purpose of this conference is the networking between the Student Branch Chapter and the designation of their accomplishments during the past year.

The meeting’s schedule includes various technical sessions about the Industry and its applications, the award ceremony for the winners of contests such as Humanitarian Contest, Robotics Contest, Committee Meetings, Executive Board Meetings and more. Students, Ph.D. candidates, professors, experts and everyone who is an IEEE IAS member can participate at the meeting.

During IAS Meeting 2017, which held in Cincinnati, OH, USA our chapter’s members (Viktoria Meskova, Diamantis Bampoulas, Christina Malliou, Aristotelis Farmakis, Loukas Kotas and Professor Athanasios Karlis) that were supported by the Annual Meeting Travel Grant Program had the chance to attend the outstanding conference, including its interesting technical sessions and cultural events. As always the trip to Cincinnati was long and exhausting but at the end, it was worth it.

This year, was the first year when Annual Meeting took place at the same time with another IEEE conference, the Energy Conversion Congress, and Exposition. ECCE with at least 1300 attendees each year is quite notable and was conducted at the conference center across the street, so the participants of Annual Meeting had the opportunity to attend both conferences and attend lecture according to their scientific interests.

The first day was dedicated to the CMD Workshop. During this workshop, the CMD Officers presented their last year’s work and informed the audience about the endless possibilities within the scope of IAS. In addition to this, the Area Chairs, the Chapters Chairs, and some Student Branch Chapter Chairs presented past and upcoming activities of the area they represented.

In the afternoon, Poster Sessions of ECCE took place, where our member, Mr. Diamantis Bampoulas presented his poster titled “A Novel Dynamic Demand Control of an Electric Vehicle integrated into a Solar Nanogrid with Energy” under the scope of Electric Vehicle Energy Management.

At the end of the day, a common Welcome Reception for both conferences gave us the opportunity to meet new people and exchange ideas.

Of course, we attended the CMD Dinner, where Ms. Megha Tak,  YP Committee chair presented the chapter awards. Our Student Branch Chapter received a great number of awards, including “Chapter Web Contest 2st Prize Award” and “Continued Outstanding Performance Student Branch Chapter Award”. Our treasurer and CMD Chapter and Member Promotion and Support Committee Chair, Ms. Christina Panagiota Malliou received the “IEEE IAS Outstanding Young Member Service Award” for her contribution during this year along with Mr. Aristotelis Farmakis who was awarded for serving as “CMD PR and Sponsorship Committee Chair”.

We were very excited to watch the cultural performance of the other Chapters and participate in it with a traditional Greek dance.

During the second day, Student Poster Session took place along with the “Guide to IAS” and “Myron Zucker Student Luncheon” programs. All poster representatives shared their work with the participants and received feedback for future improvements and changes. Those who made a poster presentation received certifications and people’s appreciation for their effort to accomplish a project.

In the afternoon, the first part of Student Technical Session was fulfilled, where the participants made oral presentations and answered questions about their technical papers. After that, we attended ECCE Expo opening where various companies promoted their products and their services to the participants of both conferences.

On the third day, we attended some other very interesting presentations on the second part of Student Technical Sessions. Simultaneously, at the Poster Sessions of ECCE, Prof. Athanasios Karlis presented a poster about “Comparative Study on the Crowbar Protection Topologies for a DFIG Wind Turbine” which was published with the contribution of Andreas Giannakis and Efthymios Koroniotis, active members of our Chapter.

In the evening, we had the chance to explore the city of Cincinnati, had a short walk alongside the river and enjoy the peaceful lifestyle of its citizens.

On the fourth day, there were some more oral and poster sessions from IAS and ECCE representatives, about power converters, electric drivers, hybrid energy systems, power electronics etc.,  so we could learn more details about interesting issues being intrigued by other people’s work!

In the afternoon, we attended the formal dinner of IAS & ECCE which offered us a combination of networking with distinguished speakers and enjoying delicious dishes and live music played by an orchestra, especially for that occasion.

The last day was full of sadness for all of us because we had to leave and say goodbye to our new friends and the hospitable city of Cincinnati. Of course, the memories we made and the photos we took would remain us those beautiful days and, hopefully, we could stay in contact with our new friends through the wide variety of social media. It is nice to have the opportunity to learn something new, widen your network and at the same time have some fun in Blue Grass Country – Cincinnati. Hope to see you at the next Annual Meeting!!
