IEEE EMC Technical Meeting

February 9, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Co-sponsored by: Mr. Larry Shemetulskis – Tektronix

The Huntsville Chapter of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society invites you to attend a Technical Meeting on February 9, 2017 featuring a talk given by Mr. Michael Palvig.  The program will begin at 5:30 pm with Larry Shemetulskis of Tektronix sponsoring a free catered meal.  Mr. Palvig’s technical presentation will begin at approximately 6:20 pm after some short chapter status updates.

Synopsis: Paraboloidal reflector antennas have been the workhorse of space and satellite communication as well as remote sensing, radar, and radio astronomy for decades. Despite several newer high gain antenna concepts, it seems that the reflector antenna is here to stay. The reflector antenna is based on the beautiful geometrical properties of conic section curves, as studied by the Greek thousands of years ago.

Offset fed reflectors are especially popular. Removing feed blockage mitigates problems with side‐ and back‐lobe level, efficiency, and mutual coupling. Also offset reflectors are much easier to accommodate on a satellite platform or in a compact range test facility. However, owing to their asymmetric geometry, the offset systems will inherently introduce high cross polarization. One solution is to let the feed antenna compensate the cross polarization introduced by the geometry. Antennas using this technique are often referred to as MatchedFeeds. Unfortunately, the nature of the higher order modes in waveguides inherently limits the bandwidth of such designs. This talk will present the efforts of the speaker and others to overcome the challenge of bandwidth in Matched Feed antennas.

The meeting will be held at ADTRAN in the East Tower, 2nd floor, Fountainview Conference Room. The directions are included below (follow the Blue line on the map).

The meal and presentation are open to anyone interested in EMC: IEEE membership is not required to attend. Seating is limited to the first 75 people registered. Please RSVP/Register below.
