Moriah Hargrove Anders Named IEEE 2019 Region 5 Outstanding Young Professional
Our own IEEE Houston Executive Officer, Moriah Hargrove Anders, was recently awarded the IEEE Region 5 Outstanding Young Professional Award 2018. This award is designed to recognize members whose substantive achievements have left an undeniable imprint on the fabric of IEEE Young Professional operations within Region 5.
Moriah is currently a Patent Agent with Fletcher Yoder, a premier intellectual property law firm based in North Houston. Fletcher Yoder specializes in patent preparation and prosecution. Moriah’s work responsibilities at Fletcher Yoder include managing a full docket, interfacing with inventors and patentable subject matter, supporting recruitment efforts, and representing clients before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Moriah has a long history of volunteering with the Houston Section of IEEE. She recently transitioned into the Houston Section Executive Secretary position from the Young Professional chair position, which she held in 2017 and 2018. She also acts as a mentor and facilitator for the current Houston Section Young Professional Chair and the current Student Branch Coordinator.
As part of her impression on the Houston Section, Moriah organized devDay 2018. DevDay 2018 was a conference hosted by Moriah, the Houston Section leadership, and Student Branch leadership to support local young professionals and engineers to improve their professional wellbeing. The primary goal of the event was to provide an educational environment for students and young professionals to network, while auxiliary goals included increasing local involvement in the Houston Section from young professionals. DevDay 2018 was a tremendous success and featured seven presentations, covering a variety of professional development topics that focused on electrical engineering career interests and needs. Presentations included career path exploration for engineers, arc flash, demonstrations of Eaton technology as installed in the field. 60 people attended the conference and reviews were positive, indicating the impact of the event in the community. Furthermore, the Houston Section has retained three volunteers from the conference planning committee and have elevated these volunteers into key volunteering positions within the Houston Section. In addition, many of the attendees from IEEE University of Houston and IEEE Texas A&M increased their personal involvement in their student branches, with some becoming officers.
Moriah’s award will be presented at the 2019 IEEE Region 5 Annual Conference during the Awards Banquet April 6, 2018, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Lafayette, LA. See http://r5conferences.org/ for details and registration.
