Memo: IEEE Houston Section Young Professionals

IEEE HOU Sec Young Professionals

A Short Memo to the IEEE Houston Section Young Professionals:

I take my goals seriously.  As part of my New Year traditions, I set a few goals for IEEE Young Professionals (while eating a serving of black eyed peas and cornbread).  With goal setting, there is a particular magic to writing your goals down and publishing them.

To better understand where I’m coming from with these goals, the IEEE Houston Section Executive Committee restarted our YP affinity group last July.  Our first event, the McCormick & Schmick’s Networking Happy Hour, was a hit.  More than 20 engaged and intelligent young professionals attended. And, in case you weren’t in attendance, plenty of business cards and opportunities were exchanged.

Since July, YP has hosted a discussion event in College Station regarding balancing vulnerability and confidence, tried to be accessible for YP members via email and social media, volunteered at the IEEE Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, has hosted an amazing IEEE Day celebration where we discussed leveraging our IEEE member benefits at Top Golf, and represented Houston well at the 2018 IEEE Rising Stars Conference.

Going forward, I plan on continuing momentum from 2017 and continuing to engage members through IEEE Young Professional events.  The following is a snapshot of my goals for IEEE Houston Section YP, in no particular order:

I – Continue to engage/inspire/teach members through IEEE Young Professional events. Increase attendance 25% at IEEE Young Professional events by the end of 2018. How you can help: Attend events!

II – Start a mentoring program between IEEE Student Branches and IEEE Young Professionals. Goal is to partner-up twenty students with mentors. How you can help: Email me if you want to be a mentor!

III – Coordinate a group of ten IEEE Young Professionals to attend the 2018 IEEE Future Leaders Conference in Austin, TX at the end of July. How you can help: Email me for more information about the conference!

IV – Plan and host two events that connects corporate partners of IEEE Houston Section with IEEE Young Professionals. How you can help: Email me if you have ideas for corporate/for-profit partners!

V – Extend our partnerships with the community to benefit all parties involved. Host at least one joint event with another non-profit. How you can help: Email me if you have a favorite non-profit we should work with!

∞ – Leave goals on the table for future growth. How you can help: Stay active and help me turn your goals into our goals!

All in all, our restarted YP group has been as active as ever – Frank and I are loving our leadership roles and we are both incredibly excited for 2018.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me on any of the platforms I am present on.  I am always interested in new volunteers, ideas, or partnerships.  I am also interested in ensuring Frank and I are working for you as a member, and know more about IEEE than you probably realize there is to know about the organization.

Best regards,
