January 2019 Newsletter – IEEE Young Professionals

Happy New Year YP-ers!

I hope your week is off to a great start.

My name is Rosario Diaz and I am the 2019 Young Professionals Chair for the IEEE Houston Section. I have officially made the transition into the role, so please, don’t hesitate to reach out with anything you may need, I’m happy to help!

As I have not had the pleasure of meeting everyone in person, I wanted to take a quick moment to officially introduce and share a bit about myself. I am a native Houstonian – though I never did get used to our traffic and heat! I recently graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Electrical Engineering where I was first introduced to IEEE. I have been involved with IEEE since then and have loved being able to work with the Houston Section. In 2018, I started my position as a Project Engineer for Shell Trading and Supply Operations. I live with my wonderful fiancé and two overly vocal cats. When I am not neck deep in work or IEEE, you can find me traveling or seeking out new board games to try out.

I am excited to be the YP Chair and, of course, meeting all of you at future IEEE events.

Now, let’s just go straight into YP News!

In-Review

Our 2019 year had a great kickoff with the 2nd Annual New Year Intention Setting Event! A big thank you to all who attended and made the event such a success. Remember to keep track of your goals, stay accountable and keep S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals.

Happening Now

Social Media Group Mentoring: LinkedIn & Facebook

The purpose of these newly found groups is to foster a supportive mentoring network between IEEE experienced professionals and young professionals/students. The groups are for anyone looking for a place to ask for advice to professional questions, whether it be about interview etiquette or resumes, all questions are welcomed. Job posting will be encouraged in these groups, so it will serve as an added resource in that area as well. Feel free to join one or both groups.

If you are also interested in having a long term 1:1 mentorship, consider joining the IEEE Houston YP Mentoring Program. *If you previously requested to be matched to a mentor and haven’t heard back, please send me an email with your IEEE membership number and industry interest and I will follow-up with you individually.

YP Group Communication All YP members are invited to join the Whatsapp YP Group Chat. This is a casual group chat, and everyone is encouraged to use this resource to ask any questions or share any news/events you are interested in.
