IEEE Houston Young Professionals Event: IEEE devDay 2018

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, the IEEE Houston Section Young Professionals in collaboration with the IEEE Houston Section and local student branches hosted the first IEEE devDay 2018 event with over 70 registered participants including young professionals and students UH, PVAMU, TAMU, Rice University, UT Tyler, and HCC. IEEE devDay was a day-long conference designed for young professionals and students to connect them with engineers, hiring managers, and each other. Speakers for the event include Levy Bouligny, Tiffany Ross, John Figary, Amritesh Rai, and Jimmy Guerrero, in addition to panelists Alice Wang, Andrew Gusev, Joe Pompa, and Mehr Dadwani.

A crowd favorite for the conference was John Figary’s keynote presentation covering possible career paths for engineers, and Tiffany Ross’ DISC-based personality presentation. In both sessions, attendees learned a lot about themselves and how to manage expectations for professional success going forward.

The conference was held at the Eaton Experience Center which houses working demo equipment for numerous industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

This event would not have been possible without the support from Moriah Hargrove Anders, IEEE Houston Young Professionals Chair, Chris Sanderson IEEE Houston Vice-Chair, Rosario Diaz, Shaina Le, Jonathan Bunt, and Mario Hernandez, in addition to support from event sponsors, Eaton and Covestro. Special thanks to Andrew Gusev, Amber Wright, Courtney Grochett, Carlos Alfaro, Mike Ubanoski, and John Figary for their support and time at the event. Additionally, the event organizers want to send a warm thank you to all the other volunteers who jumped in at the last minute to help fill bags, or bring food inside, in addition to event photographers, Kristina Sanderson, and her assistants.

Event Testimonials:

Being able to be a part of this event has taught me a lot about event coordination, logistics, and setting realistic goals. The Eaton team made planning this event easy especially because they allowed us to leverage their expertise to make the event run smoothly – really could not have done it without you. Also, I want to make it known that Joe Pompa from Covestro made the day of several students, and we’re all very happy he was able to attend – even in spite of the fact that he was exhausted from taking his PE exam the day before. Great turn out and great event!” – Moriah Hargrove Anders, Conference Planning Committee Lead, IEEE HOU YP Chair “IEEE DevDay was an amazing experience and applicable for all engineers – Particularly those engineers interested in the field of utility or industrial power electronics. I had a wonderful experience, networking with the volunteers and attending the sessions, and gained a lot of useful insight into how to sell myself in the job marketplace. I am looking forward to staying involved in IEEE Young Professionals going forward.” – Sean White, IEEE UH Secretary and Electrical Engineering Student.

As a recent graduate who has just entered the engineering profession, I have trouble figuring out what to do next to develop my career. Events like IEEE devDay help me start to take the next steps after college.” – Michael Green, IEEE Young Professional Member.
