IEEE HOU Sec: Young Professionals April 2018 Update

Hi IEEE HOU YP,

A lot has been happening since I last updated you.

The IEEE HOU YP Business Meeting in March went well. We revised Bylaws for IEEE HOU YP and shared a lot of good ideas for the structure of the organization going forward. The only thing left is for me to parse through the notes and finalize the Bylaws for official approval.

IEEE Region 5 Business Meeting was great. I had the chance to represent IEEE HOU YP in several board meetings and met the current IEEE President candidates as well as the current IEEE President, Jim Jefferies. Having the private audiences I did, I was able to recommend new initiatives that are (hopefully) implemented on behalf of IEEE HOU YP’s interests.

The IEEE devDay 2018 was a great success. More than 75 people attended the event. Couldn’t attend this time? We’re crazy enough to do it again this year. My planning committee is wanting to turn IEEE devDay into an electrical engineering career fair and conference, and the best time to start planning it is Sunday (the day after the first conference ends). If you’re interested in helping out, email me and I’ll get you involved.

Most importantly, however…

IEEE HOU YP upcoming events:

  1. Atec, Inc. + IEEE Happy Hour – 4/20 5PM-7PM Job hunting, know someone who’s job hunting, just want to hang out with cool people in an even cooler bar with free food? Come out and speak with Atec representatives at our first corporately sponsored IEEE happy hour. There will be raffles!

  1. Graduating Senior STEP Event – 4/28 1PM-3PM This event is for graduating seniors and young professionals who want to pay full print to attend. The lecture scheduled for this event is focused on students who are graduating and entering grad school, or the work force. Freebies for graduating seniors to celebrate you making it this far!

  1. Biomedical Panel Discussion + I2MTC – 5/14 4PM – evening I2MTC, an international conference for instrumentation of all sorts, is being held in Houston this year. Conference organizers have invited my IEEE HOU YP members to sign up to attend the panel session and welcome reception without having to purchase conference tickets. Small fee is required to ensure attendees are serious about attending, since I am limited to only 15 spots.

  1. IEEE Future Leaders Conference – July 26-28. Email me if you’re planning on attending and I will coordinate a YP meeting while we’re all in Austin for the weekend. Also, as a complimentary service, I’ll introduce you to everyone I know at the conference too!

If you have ideas, I want them. PM me with your thoughts, concerns, or for life advice. I casually mentor several young professionals and have plenty of fresh ideas to spread.

See you at one of my many upcoming events.

(Also dancing robots, since isn’t this really why we became engineers?)

Until next time,

Sincerely,

Moriah Hargrove Anders
