IEEE HOU Sec. February 2018 Keynote Speaker: Ulisses M. Braga Neto

The  Signal Processing Society of IEEE Houston Section cordially invites its members, future members, and guests to attend our February meeting on Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Time: 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM

Location: 5430 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77056

Pattern Recognition for Small-Sample Genomic Data: Modern biomedical applications based on genomic and proteomic expression profiles often produce large amounts of data characterized by a very large number of measurements made on a much smaller number of sample points. This introduces difficult challenges in the application of classification methods to obtain accurate predictive models. In this talk, we discuss our recent work on this topic, highlighting Bayesian approaches to classification of proteomic and metagenomic data, as well as novel approaches for classification and error estimation based on restricted and nonstationary data.

Ulisses M. Braga Neto is a Brazilian-American Electrical Engineer and is currently Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University. His main research areas are statistical pattern recognition, machine learning, signal and image processing, and systems biology. He has worked extensively in the field of error estimation for pattern recognition and machine learning, having published with Edward R. Dougherty the first book dedicated to this topic. He also made contributions to the field of Mathematical Morphology in signal and image processing.
