EMBS  Houston Chapter organizes a End-of-Year Science-Art Performance “Your Brain on Art “

Wearing skull caps equipped with sensors to measure brain activity ‘in action and in context’, musician Woody Witts, dancer Becky Valls and visual artist Dario Robleto played a variation of Exquisite Corpse, a collaborative, chance-based game made famous by the Surrealists in the 1920s.

The event was held as part of a groundbreaking collaboration between the IEEE EMBS Houston Chapter, the NSF IUCRC BRAIN Center, Houston-based artists, and the University of Houston’s Noninvasive Brain-Machine Interface Systems Laboratory, seeking clues to what happens in the brain as people create, perform, and contemplate art.

The demonstration held at the Student Center North Lounge at the University of Houston on Dec 18, 2018,  was followed by a discussion of the artists’ process and the goals of the research — funded in part by the National Science Foundation award BCS 1533691 and led by engineering professor Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal  and Chair of the EMBS Houston Chapter— to study the connection between the brain and creativity, expression, and the perception of art.
