Christopher Sanderson Receives IEEE Region 5 Jim Leonard Outstanding Member Award

IEEE Houston Section Vice Chairman and South Area Chair for Region 5  Christopher Sanderson has been awarded the Jim Leonard Outstanding Member Award.    The James Leonard award is named in the memory and honor of Mr. Leonard, who was both a former Region 5 director and an IEEE-USA president.  This award is given to an individual member who has performed outstanding service to the Section, Region, and IEEE.

Christopher is an Account Manager with HV Sales, Inc. a leading regional electrical equipment Manufacturers Representative firm based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Christopher has been a very active volunteer with the Houston Section of IEEE for the past seven years.  He was encouraged and mentored in IEEE involvement by the late PJ Donner.

Some of Christopher’s accomplishments in 2018 include:

Sponsoring the IEEEXtreme Programing Competition –   Christopher supported and participated in the 24 hour competition with Rice University and the University of Houston in answering the programming challenge.  Both university’s teams placed high out of the 150 global and U.S. based teams, which was a great success.  This year’s competition could not have happened without the outstanding efforts of Christopher and support he mustered from the IEEE Houston Section’s volunteer community.

Christopher has been a tireless supporter of our Life Members and supported the 2018 Region 5 Life Member meeting of Houston area Life Members.  It was a huge success with 28 Life Members attending.

Christopher has done a tremendous job supporting IEEE Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) in 2018.  He has hosted sessions at both Prairie View A&M, his alma mater, and at the University of Houston.  Christopher helped to reestablish the Prairie View A&M chapter of Eta Kappa Nu in early 2018.

As the Region 5 South Area Chair, Christopher serves four of the largest sections in Region 5; Houston, Central Texas, Dallas and Ft. Worth, plus Corpus Christi and Galveston Bay sections.  His outstanding leadership in working with these sections proved once again his value to the IEEE overall.  Just a few of Christopher’s accomplishments in 2018 include the Recognition & support for IEEE Central Texas Section Appreciation Dinner, the Austin Health Forum: “Blockchain-Based Healthcare Initiatives”, Seminars for IEEE PES Ft. Worth Section and the Corpus Christi / Kingsville Student Branch: What are Standards? and the IEEE TAMU Galveston Student Branch Visit.

Christopher’s award will be presented at the 2019 IEEE Region 5 Annual Conference during the Awards Banquet April 6, 2018 held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Lafayette, LA.  See http://r5conferences.org/ for details and registration.
