The Role of Data Mining in Research Methodology

February 7, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

February 7th, 2017   (Tuesday) Luncheon Meeting

TOPIC:  “The Role of Data Mining in Research Methodology

SPEAKER: Dr. Trung Pham, University of Talca, Chile

PRESENTATION: Data analysis is a task commonly found in almost every discipline of study. In this setting, a researcher forms a hypothesis, designs some experiments to collect data, and analyzes the data to confirm or refute the hypothesis. One common tendency in human behavior is to only see what a person is looking for while ignoring other data that might reveal valuable information relevant to other issues. The larger a data set, the more likely it is for a researcher to overlook smaller subsets of data that might appear as outside the scope of interest. To address this tendency in human behavior, data mining was designed to identify these subsets so that they can be analyzed for additional information that can eventually be valuable to a researcher. Examples of data mining are given in the analysis of images for detection of motion. Furthermore, some computational aspects of data mining are examined in terms of identifying research topics that can advance the state of the arts.

SPEAKER: Bio: Trung Pham received his BSEE, MS, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rice University; and his MBA from the University of Houston in Clear Lake. He is currently a professor in information system engineering, and the Director of the Center of Research in Information Technology at the University of Talca in Chile. He was awarded two R&D research projects (totaling about $800K USD) by the Chilean agency CONICYT, one on application of encryption technology, and the other on data mining. Trung is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Senior Member of the ISA. Previously, Trung worked for Lockheed Engineering and for McDonnell Douglas Aerospace at JSC in Houston.
