Software Probability Risk Assessment (PRA) in Safety Critical Software

March 28 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

March 28, 2019   (Thursday) Luncheon Meeting

TOPIC:  “Software Probability Risk Assessment (PRA) in Safety Critical SoftwareIEEE-GBS-20190328

Speaker:  Mr. Adam Mullins, International Space Station (ISS) Safety PRA Analyst

We will begin with a brief history of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), noting its inception in the nuclear industry after the Three Mile Island accident near Harrisburg, PA in 1979. Next, the presentation will move into how NASA uses PRA to assess risk on the International Space Station while making informed risk decisions better managing resources. As systems rely more and more on a software component, the need to assess software risk is needed for these complex systems. Finally, we will round off the discussion with the current academic and industry efforts to assess software risk through quantitative methods.

Speaker Bio:

Mr. Mullins is originally from a small town in rural Northwest Ohio. After high school, he attended Ball State University where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and minor in Computer Science. During his time at Ball State, he worked as an upper level mathematics tutor and research assistant to Dr. Dan Rutherford in the field of Topology. He completed his senior year at Ball State remotely while simultaneously completing two internships in NASA JSC’s International Space Station (ISS) Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate. Mr. Mullins now resides in Webster, Texas where he continues to work in ISS Safety as a Risk Analyst performing Probabilistic Risk Assessments.
